The main idea is for students to apply their knowledge from the novel The Lightning Thief, which they study in Grade 5. The lesson will focus on the chapter in which Mrs. Dodds reveals her true identity as a Fury while Percy is visiting the museum.

They will use their creativity to answer the question: "What if the story had ended differently?" Today we are going to meet a very friendly character! His name is Apolodor and he is a special penguin: he sings in the circus choir, wears a tailcoat, and lives on a giant fridge. Although he has many friends and everyone loves him, one day Apolodor was overcome by a huge sadness. He felt an intense longing for his home at the South Pole (or Labrador, as he says in the poem!).

(1)   Let's read the excerpt above together with intonation, as if we were on a theatre stage!

(2)   After we read, I propose a secret emotion-detective mission:

·         Apolodor's Heart Map: On your sheet of paper, draw a big heart. Inside it, write 3 words that show how Apolodor feels when he thinks about his home.

·         A Saving Postcard: Imagine you are Apolodor's friends from the circus. Write him a short letter (of maximum 5 sentences) to encourage him and propose a cheerful solution to get back to his brothers. What unusual means of transport could he travel by?"

Apolodor needs our help to come to life and start his great journey! Today we will become engineers and designers. We will create an ice floe on which Apolodor will stand, ready to leave!

What do we need?

• A paper cup (which we will transform into Apolodor's body)

• Glazed paper (black, white, and orange)

• Cotton wool (for the snow on the ice floe)

• A paper plate (which will be our ice floe)

• Glue, scissors, and markers

How do we work? Steps to follow:

1. Dress the cup: Glue black paper around the paper cup. This is Apolodor's penguin tailcoat!

2. Add the details: Cut out a white oval belly, two curious eyes, and an orange beak, then glue them onto the cup. Don't forget the black flippers on the sides!

3. Prepare the ice floe: On the paper plate, spread a thin layer of glue and place soft clouds of cotton wool. This will be his snow-covered ice floe.

4. The means of transport: Draw and cut out on colored paper the means of transport you proposed in your letter (a hot air balloon, a small airplane, or a rescue boat) and glue it on the ice floe, next to Apolodor."
