The reason i enjoy this course is in the first place because i have a child, and in second place because i work in a school and it's dificult to get parents engagement in school life of their children. Engaging parents in their children’s school life is a one protective factors of my work. I'm a psychologist and i know that greater health impact might be achieved by also enhancing protective factors that help children and adolescents avoid multiple behaviors that place them at risk for adverse health and educational outcomes. I have to learn more about this to show parents how to improve the learning, development, and health of children and adolescents.

As I already said I am a Primary school teacher in a Minority school in Greece. My pupils are greek citizens but muslims. Their mother language is Turkish and they start learning and sometimes hearing Greek for the forst time in primary school. As a teacher and as a parent, every day I verify the importance of parental support to improve student well-being and performance.
In the schools where I have taught, I have contacted with very interested parents who have a positive and decisive influence on the educational background of their children. However, throughout my professional life I have been faced many times (often times) with situations where parents are completely estranged from their children's school life for many reasons.
According to my experience, this type of parental behavior is more frequent, but not exclusive, of disadvantaged socioeconomic contexts. As Maria Tobin states in the video, it is necessary to empower these parents so that they can support their children. But how can we do it?
I have tried with other peers to capture the attention of these parents, to build partnerships and to engage them in their children's school life, but these efforts have not had the expected results.
As a professional, this is one of my major concerns, so I enrolled in this course, to learn about other realities and discover new strategies to approach this problem.

As a primary school I had many meetings with parents, but I often got the feeling that those meetings were not as productive as I wanted. I have across many kinds of parents. Usually the more concerned ones have children without any learning or social problems. On the other hand, children struggling in school often showed signs of parental negligence and lake of interest regarding school matters. I joined this course, because I find thqt parental engagement in schools is not always effective. A substantial amount of colleagues and I have tries in the past to collaborate with parents but this sometimes has not worked (especially with parents of migrant and Rom pupils). On the other hand it is not easy at all to manage manipulative parents (such parents are found more often in primary education): these parents suggest teachers that they sould teach / act / work / treat their child/children in a particular way.
There are also parents, who seem indifferent to their children's school life. The majority of these parents have children who have difficulties either in their learning process or in their behaviour.
In 2007 I attended a course with the same topic in Patras, Greece (in the local Regional Training Center, the official in-service course provider in Greece). I have expanded my knowledge with regard to this issue, but I think that I have to expand even more my knowledge.I hope that this course will help me to manage manipulative and indifferent parents in a more effective way than I used to.

I have many teenager students having some problems with parents. As it is known, adolscence is the most risky and important period and all parents should be very careful about raising their teenage kids. So I strongly believe that parents must involve in the process actively and always keep in contact with the teachers. Adolescence is a quite critical life stage. I agree that some of our students don't show who they really are. Some of the parents don't understand their children's behavior at school because they are totally different at home. By joining these different perspectives and adding parents' experience on their kids to teaching strategies, we will be able to reach the learner's interests and improve learning outcomes. I'm a language teacher in a vocational school and I'm also a class diretor as well as the coordinator of class diretors. From my experience I can tell that few parents engage actively at school and usually they only come to school when they are asked to or at the end of each term to receive their chidren's end of term evaluation. School context are very different, just like families. There are parents that get involved and are always present while other´s are always out. It doesn´t mean that do (not) love their children. I Think it is just an attitude issue. They could moderate these attitudes from their own parent. They could (or could not) be present at school because of work, health problems, economics, social issues, or… or… or… Sometimes get engaged in school activities can be a choice. Sometimes there are no choice.

Teacher´s and schools professionals can be parents as well and sometimes they are in schools, looking for their students issues, instead of being present and engaged in their own children school live.

Understand these discrepancies in families, and deal with them in our day´s schools is one of my issues. Get strategies to engage those parents that are always “out” and facilitate them to be “in” their children´s school life. Reflect on strategies to deal with family and professional targets.

The main reason why I joined this course is the fact that I consider that children's education should be shared by parents and teachers. First of all, I must say that the online trainings here are very professional,provided sources are useful and advices are practical.What triggered my interest in this topic,as I work in a private high school which has parents who have high expectances, sometimes it is really hard to know how to involve them in the process.Of course,I am an experienced teacher.but I believe that I still have some areas need to be improved.I want to learn how to assign specificroles to parents in the learning process and to know exactly what role should the parents have

I’ve enrolled this course because I want to engage parents completely. I’ve been a teacher for 13 years and I couldn’t succeed to build a strong relationship with all parents. Some of them are really concerned with the success of their children and the others don’t show much interest in their children’s school life. I want to learn how to make the second group engage in school life.This really matters. I believe that this mooc enables us to overcome the difficulties that we come across.
