In 2015, I took part in the Two Writing Teachers Slice of Life Story Challenge during the month of March. The challenge is to blog each day and also read and comment on three other blog posts daily. During this time, I wrote a blog post about my preschool teacher, Mrs. Skeggs.(http://couragedoesnotroar.blogspot.com/2015/03/thankful-thursday-sol15-day-12.html )
I wrote how thankful I was for her and how sad I had been to learn that she passed away years after I was in her class. One of Mrs. Skeggs' relatives found the post online and read it, sharing it with Mrs. Skeggs' husband. He wrote me a beautiful letter, thanking me for my post and telling me about his children and what they are up to now as adults. It was such a lovely correspondence. It felt good to know that my words made an impact- Mr. Skeggs was so happy to know that his wife's influence lives on in one of her students, who is now a teacher, too. I never would have made that connection if not for writing and sharing my blog post.

After my grandmother died, I wrote about a place that mattered to me--her home. It was sold before she died, and I was devastated. Writing about it and why it mattered to me brought her to life again, and now I use that piece as a mentor text for my students when they write on the same topic. She is brought to life again every year!
