The United States Census Bureau, polling organizations and journalists, usually use this subdivision. The West: (Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, Utah, California, Nevada, Idaho, Oregon, Washington, Alaska, Hawaii, Arizona, New Mexico). The West is divided into two regions: Mountain states and Pacific states. 
Wide regional diversity makes the West hard to typify. While most of the Mountain West is arid wilderness, California has some of the richest farmland in the country. Also this part of the West is densely populated and highly industrial. Westerners are united in their long-standing hostility toward Washington and Eastern federal bureaucrats, because the government policies doesn't take into account the interests of their region. Westerners like to think of themselves as independent, self-sufficient, and close to the land, but they feel they cannot control their own destiny while Washington controls their land. Americans have long regarded the West as a “last frontier”, because it was the last region whose territories was admitted as states (1959). The South: (Arkansas, Louisiana, Kentucky, Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama, Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Texas, Oklahoma). The South is divided into three regions: South Atlantic states, East South Central states and West South Central states. Regional identity has been most pronounced in the South, where the peculiarities of Southern history have played an important role in shaping the region's character. South always was about best farming opportunities. Some farmers, capitalizing on tobacco and cotton crops, became really prosperous. Many of them established large plantations. African slaves, shipped by the Spanish, Portuguese, and English, supplied labor for these plantations. Southerners are more conservative, more religious and more violent than the rest of the country. Southerners are the most "native" of any region because fewer immigrants were attracted to the less industrialized South. The Midwest: (Illinois, Iowa, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri, North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana, Ohio, Indiana, Michigan). The Widwest is divided into two regions: East North Central states, West North Central states. The Midwest is known as a region of small towns and huge tracts of farmland. As the Midwest developed, it attracted not only easterners but also Europeans. People from Germany, Sweden, Finland, Ireland, Poland and Ukraine settled here. The Midwest has the most fertile land and for these reasons, the region was nicknamed the nation’s breadbasket. Mid-westerners are seen as “down-to-earth”, commercially-minded, self-sufficient, friendly and straightforward. Class divisions are felt less strongly here than in other regions. The region’s position in the middle of the continent, far removed from the east and west coasts, has encouraged Midwesterners to direct their concerns to their own domestic affairs, avoiding matters of wider interest. The North (Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Vermont, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware and Maryland). The Northeast, comprising the New England and Mid-Atlantic states, has traditionally been at the helm of the nation's economic and social progress. Compared with other regions, the Northeast is more urban, more industrial, and more culturally sophisticated. New Englanders often describe themselves as thrifty, reserved, and dedicated to hard work, qualities they inherited from their Puritan forefathers. New England's colleges and universities are known all over the country for their high academic standards.
