They strip the people of natural thought and make it to where they can not form the idea of thinking on their own and not believing the governments words. In the book Winston realizes that the Party can make the people under it believe that "two plus two equals 5" when it does not. The Party also makes the people under it believe that the rations and the war they are in are the things that need to happen to prove that they are the best country and to prove that the are superior. This isn't reality keeps the people depressed and keeps them in a state of naive because they have no will to go forward and find things out for themselves.
