While Rose begs Troy to return home on Friday instead of seeing Alberta, they get a call from the hospital saying Alberta has given birth to Troy's baby girl but Alberta has died in the process. In his quiet lament of Alberta's death, Troy speaks to death and says, "I'm gonna build me a fence around what belongs to me. And then I want you to stay on the other side. see?" (pg.77). Troy explains to Rose, "I can just be a part of myself that I ain't never been." (Pg.69).
