This event is important in bilingual education for a few reasons. One reason is that the Common Core Standards are SUPPOSED to help all children learn the same skills and make sure that all children succeed once they graduate from high school. This includes children that are bilingual or Emergent Bilingual students. Another reason that it is important, is that it may put an extra strain on the education of EBs, depending on their ability to learn academic language in the English language. There is a focus on increased academic vocabulary, which could be an extra burden for EBs...depending on their proficiency level. Also, along with Common Core State Standards come additional assessments, which add to the amount of assessments that EBs are required to take during the academic year.

This event is important in bilingual education today because states have more responsibility for creating their own accountability systems and ESSA is more explicit about teacher preparation for ELLs/EBs. Also, it is easier to track EBs progress now that statewide entrance and exit procedures are standardized throughout the state. In addition, EB student monitoring has been improved
