Simon Birch was born with Dwarfism. Due to his short stature he was constantly judged by others in negative ways due to his size, the way he spoke, the way he walked, and his huge belief in God. All Simon ever wanted was to live a life just like everyone around him. In the past Simon was constantly forced to sit out of baseball games or told to not swing the bat by his coach. But by finally getting an opportunity to swing the bat he was eager to show everyone who he was. Unfortunately Simon hit a foul ball that struck his best friend Joe's mother in the head and indirectly killed her. He finally got a chance to show people who he was and it resulted in him getting traumatized and making his battle with self esteem and identity that much harder.
