The first compound microscopes were created and bilt around 1600. This type of microscopes used two lenses, one placed at each end of a tube. In this way the second lens is able to amplify the image created by the first lens, creating much higher resolving power. It's not clear who invented the first microscope, but the Dutch spectacle maker Zacharias Janssen is credited with making one of the earliest compound microscopes.

In 1665, the English scientist, Robert Hook used a compound microscope to observe a thin layer of cork and described what he saw as 'tiny cells', which looked similar to the cells that monks inhabited. He also coined the term "cell," and was the first to publish a depiction of a microorganism.

In 1830s Matthias Schleiden, a botanist, proposed an early version of the cell theory, next to Theodor Schwann, a zoologist, in wich they claimed that the cell is the basic unit of life and that all living things are made of cells. This German botanist, concluded that all plant tissues are composed of cells and that an embryonic plant arose from a single cell.
