My first visit occured on Feb. 15 at Matthews Medical Center. I started in the Emergency Department for the first part of the morning then transitioned to the Cath Lab. It was a great experience being able to be back at the hospital. When I worked at the hospital as an registered nurse I was on the Medical & Surgical Unit so it was interesting see other units in the hospital. The ED (Emergency Department) was of couse fast paced and a lot going on. It was nice to see the new charting and policies that are inplace at the hospital. I was able to see a patient have a heart rate of 35-40 (normal is 60-100) and the patient acted fine but was weak. The Cath Lab was amazing! I was able to see a stent be placed in the coronary arteries. I was able to bring this information back to the classroom since we were discussing the Circulatory System. Since translators are hard to come by in the hospital all units have an iPad that you can "facetime" a translator. Most all the languages are in this program but not all of them actually show the person translating. It was very interesting to watch and listen too. We set up a time for them to visit the school. Conmet then came to SVHS and did a presentation on manufacturing and careers after high school and after college at the company. I am making my first visit to the plant this week. My experience with Union County Gov't. was a bit different.  I never went to observe the "day to day" operations of UCG, but my contact Donna and myself had some meeting in the fall and planned a tour of the Old Courthouse downtown in conjunction with a book by a local author on a story dealing with Jim Crow laws and an inheritance.  In late January my US History class took a field trip to downtown and completed a role play based on the book in the old courtroom.  During the visit, the students were also able to get an oral history about the courthouse and downtown area from the County Manager, a definite highlight of the morning.  We at lunch at the Library downtown and then had a presentation given to us, by the Board of Elections on how voting takes place in Union County.  We had enough time in the afternoon that I was able to drive the students in the bus to the land in the county that the dispute was about.  Overall, the day was incredible for the students to actually  see a local example of how a concept we discuss in class affected people in their own community.  We are in the process of developing a another experience for my AP psychology class, where they can have a roundtable discussion with some of the people in Government that deal with psychology on a daily basis.]]> 2019-03-18 13:51:09 UTC https://padlet.com/allen_plyler/1tgqvtlcy45n/wish/342394985 allen_plyler https://padlet.com/allen_plyler/1tgqvtlcy45n/wish/342633993 Thank you Ms. Clontz, Mr. Stokes, Mr. Conroy and Mr. Woolf. ]]> 2019-03-18 22:37:26 UTC https://padlet.com/allen_plyler/1tgqvtlcy45n/wish/342633993 2/22 meeting recap with Union County Government patrick_conroy https://padlet.com/allen_plyler/1tgqvtlcy45n/wish/342637855 Good evening. I moved up the meeting to yesterday, so it would be one day less away from the classroom. Our meeting was very informative. I will update you as will move forward with this project.

He is a crime scene investigator for Union County Sheriff's Department. We toured the CSI lab which included me getting finger printed as welll as learning about the various techniques for obtaining prints. I was intrigued with the equipment to download info from cell phones too. The final couple of hours we spent learning about the drone that he uses and how he became FAA certified. I learned that Union County does not possess a "no fly zone" for drones. And of course, the final couple of hours were spent observing him flying the drone and the advanced sensor technology it possesses! 

I was awarded money which I will be using to purchase classroom drones. We discussed and researched types of drones for education use. He hopes to have his new $25,000 drone for my visit next month!

I plan on asking my alliance partner with CSI at the Sherriff's Office how he may be using the county GIS.
