In a peaceful village by the sparkling Lake Lanao, there was a curious boy named Amir. One morning, he saw his grandmother, Babu Amina, who was holding a beautiful and colorful malong. The fabric was so colorful it looked like it was dancing in the sunlight. “Babu, what’s so special about the malong?” Amir asked, Babu Amina chuckled and patted his head. “Ah, Amir, the malong is magical. It can become anything you need it to be.” Amir’s eyes widened “Anything?” “Yes, and tonight at the Kappa Malong-malong festival, you’ll see its magic for yourself."

That evening, the village square was bustling with excitement. The music from the kulintang and agong filled the air as everyone gathered, wearing their colorful malongs. Babu Amina led Amir to the center. “Watch carefully, anak,” she said. The dancers began their performance. One used the malong as a blanket, wrapping it around her shoulders. Another turned it into a sack to carry rice. A third transformed it into a beautiful skirt and spun around, making the colors swirl. “Wow!” Amir exclaimed. “The malong really is magical!” Babu Amina smiled. “It shows how us, Maranaos, are clever and resourceful. We use it in so many ways, just like our ancestors did.” Then, Babu Amina pointed to the intricate designs on the malong. “Do you see these patterns, Amir? Each one tells a story. Some show bravery, others show love or gratitude.” Amir traced the patterns with his finger. “It’s like having a storybook on your clothes!” “That’s right,” Babu Amina said. “And when we wear the malong, we carry our history and traditions with us.”

As they were talking, the Singkil dance began. Amir watched in awe as the dancers, wearing their malongs, gracefully stepped between clapping bamboo poles. “Babu, what’s this dance about?” Amir asked. “It’s from our epic, the Darangen,” Babu Amina explained. “It tells of a brave princess who faced many challenges. The dance reminds us to be strong and graceful, no matter what happens.” Amir clapped his hands in excitement. “I want to learn the Singkil too!”

After the festival, Amir wrapped his own malong around him like a cape. “Babu, I’ll always wear my malong and remember its magic. It makes me proud to be Maranao!” Babu Amina hugged him tightly. “That’s my boy. With your malong, you’ll carry our culture and stories wherever you go." And from that day on, Amir never went anywhere without his magic malong.
