What text did your students read? Describe the process of having students find the main ideas (did they use sticky notes, highlighters, etc?). How did the use of the VIP strategy impact student comprehension?

I used a write around the text strategy to introduce the VIP (Very Important Points) strategy. I had a high interest and real world topic article about "What Causes Bad Breath." Students had a few minutes to read the article and brainstorm what they might want to write/say. I gave starters from the Say Something strategy to help those that struggled to come up with ideas. Then students had time to write ideas and respond to each other. With my first couple classes, I had them write their ideas directly on the chart paper around the article. For a class later in the day, I had them write two ideas on two different sticky notes and then put them on the chart paper near what they were responding to. I think this modification was very helpful for the students that needed more time to process or needed support expressing their ideas as they didn't feel as rushed as others were writing. On Day 2, students will discuss with their groups what they think the 3 VIPs should be. We will discuss evidence based terms to support why the points they selected are VIPs and then form it into a summary paragraph.

I used the VIP strategy for an article "Exercise and Stress". It was in our mental health unit, and students already had a bit of introductory information regarding stress and exercise, but this article went more indepth. Students needed to read the article on their i-pad and using their highlighter, highlight 3-5 VIPs, and also wrote down WHY they chose them as their VIPs. I like this strategy because students need to read the whole article first before deciding the most important facts/points. It requires the students to carefully weigh the different pieces of information and prioritize what they feel are the most central pieces of information related to the topic.
