Dear Parents/Carers,

Summer is here!

This term, the children will be continuing to develop their learning across the different curriculum areas so please continue to support your child at home. The children have been working very hard so that they are best prepared for the upcoming SATs tests in May.

The children will also begin practicing for their end of year production, which we know they are very excited about - all will be revealed soon!

Mrs O'Shea, Miss Allen and Mrs Gandu have been amazed with the children's attitude and determination already in Year 6. This term we will be ensuring children are confident and ready for their next step to secondary school in September.

Spelling practice –(daily)
Times tables and quick recall of number facts—(daily)
Comprehension and Maths homework will be sent home on a Wednesday to be handed in on the following Wednesday.

In addition, extra homework will be sent home if your child’s teacher feels it will help your child to practise what they have learnt in school that day.

Your assistance in ensuring that your child completes the above homework to a good standard would be greatly appreciated.

All Year 6 children are expected to read for a minimum of 30 minutes daily (this should be from a mix of genre and should also include both Fiction and Non-fiction texts) and they should complete their reading records each day.

When children have finished reading a book, they should upload a book review onto their class Reading Padlet.

Teams Fluency

All children are set homework on Teams Fluency. The children need to read the text aloud and they will be scored on their accuracy and pace. This is also a weekly requirement.

We will be Reading a range of texts including class novels such as Skellig by David Almond.

Investigating the following:

• setting and characters

• the characters’ choices

• the writers’ use of language

• discussions around children’s rights

• links to History, Geography and PSHE

• Reading and writing a range of fiction, nonfiction and poetry.

Animals (including humans)

The children will work scientifically by:

o Planning scientific enquiries, recognising and controlling variables.

o Taking measurements using a range of scientific equipment.

o Recording data and results

They will recognise that living things have changed over time and that fossils provide information about living things that inhabited the Earth millions of years ago

Recognise that living things produce offspring of the same kind, but normally offspring vary and are not identical to their parents

Identify how animals and plants are adapted to suit their environment in different ways and that adaptation may lead to evolution

The classrooms are open from 8.30 and the children are encouraged to come into the classrooms then to practise maths. Some children have tution groups and they need to be in school and ready to start at 8.30 promptly. The register is taken at 8.50. All children should enter the school through the loading bay at this time and be ready to be greeted by their class teachers. It is essential for your child to attend school everyday and to be in class on time.

The school office should be notified of all absences.

The school day finishes at 3.20 and children can be collected from the KS2 playground.

School uniform

Penn Wood school has a strong community feel and to enhance the feeling of unity the school has a uniform which is smart, practical and appropriate for the school environment. Please ensure that your child wears the appropriate school uniform daily, which also includes flat, black shoes. We would also like to remind you that jewellery is not allowed apart from plain ear studs and watches. As the weather begins to get colder and you start to think about buying your child a new coat, please ensure that their school coat is plain and a dark colour.

PE kit

Ebony - Monday and Tuesday

Mahogany - Monday and Wednesday
Teak- Tuesday and Wednesday

As part of the National Curriculum, all children must partake in physical education.

Children will be allowed to arrive to school in their PE kits and not need to bring their school uniform on these days. Appropriate trainers for outdoor PE is essential for Health and Safety reasons.

The children will learn about Earth shattering events such as volcanoes, earthquakes, tsunamis and the devastation they can leave behind.

Have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument- Keyboard- playing as a soloist and with increasing accuracy, fluency and control. Learn to maintain 2 parts at the same time by using LH and RH separately and then together.

Use and understand staff notation – read and play from staff notation for pitch and rhythm.

The children will be designing and coding a project that captures inputs from a physical device.
Then they will be planning, developing, and evaluating 3D computer models of physical objects.

The children will be learning how the Industrial Revolution changed the landscape of Britain and the way we live.
They will look at how different groups of people view the changes to society that occurred in the Industrial Revolution.

The Ancient Maya

The children will be looking at The Mayans, focusing on:
• who were they and why did their civilisation decline
• similarities and differences between Mayan and Egyptian Civilisations
• explain how the Mayan culture developed and how the advances they made enabled them to take control of a vast area of land and remain in power over many centuries.
