Choosing to not follow or forgetting to follow a student’s IEP not only means you a breaking a state law, but also most likely severely impeding a child’s performance. The testing and classroom accommodations written on the document are proven interventions that work for the particular student it is written for. If we are not implementing the listed accommodations daily, we are only hurting the student's chances for success on the STAAR. I think the STAAR accommodation list is most important on an IEP. This is what they can use on the big test, so it is important to make sure each IEP student is using these accommodations each day of the year. If a student's IEP says they can use a calculator, and they have never seen or used a calculator until the day of the test, that calculator which was meant to help the student is now not helpful because they don't know how to use it since they have not been using it throughout the year. ]]> 2019-04-30 21:09:14 UTC https://padlet.com/rachel_lilley/1tamu149ia1e/wish/355630750 rachel_lilley https://padlet.com/rachel_lilley/1tamu149ia1e/wish/355630773 I cover my classroom in anchor charts and I use manipulatives at my small group Teacher Table to provide further approaches to what we are learning. Anchor charts have proven to be helpful for me because my charts are always available for the students, they provide strategies like PEMDAS, they remind them of important rules, and they provide pictures and examples with limited words. A lot of times teaching just the computation approach can be hard for kids to grasp. Even doing it over and over again does not help. They need to know why the computation approach I am teaching works, so I bring in further approaches at my Teachers Table if it is necessary. A problem I run into frequently is word problems. They understand the skill but when you throw in words, it totally throws them off. “I need help” comes very quickly. I teach strategies for word problems like eliminate useless information, draw a picture of the problem, and underline or circle vocabulary words used in the problem.
