"Silence is a source of great strength" - Laozi, sometimes called Lao Tzu. Laozi was a chinese philosopher. The very man who created Taoism/Daoism (they are the same thing). So little is known about Laozi. For all we know he could have never existed. Laozi was considered a wise man. He was very important, founding an important religion for China. Laozi helped China become what it is today.

Not much info was written about Laozi's childhood or family. Legend says that he spent 80 years in his mother's womb. At the time he was born, the Zhou Dynasty was doing well. Sometime during his life, Laozi met Confucius. It is said that upon their meeting, Laozi criticized Confucius while Confucius compared Laozi to a dragon, which was like a sign of respect.

Some people say he married and others say he didn't. Historians say that if he did marry, he had a son named Zong, a legendary soldier. When Zong killed someone, he would leave their body un-buried and left them to be eaten by the animals and elements surrounding it. Laozi was disappointed by this and told his son how he should respect the dead.

Near his death, Laozi saw that the Zhou Dynasty lost the Mandate of heaven. Laozi, distressed, traveled to the west toward uncharted lands. When reaching the gates at Xiango, Yinxi, the guard of the gate, recognized Laozi and made Laozi give his wisdom to pass. Laozi wrote down what he knew and now its known as the Tao Te Ching, the central beliefs of Taoism. These beliefs would shape the base of Chinese culture for years to come.

The book was about over 2,000 words. It was a sort of guide to having a good life. The book discusses "dao", the way to "happiness, harmony and virtue". During the imperial china age, the ruling class took influence from the Tao Te Ching book, written by Laozi. They created a new type of politics, where they ruled by doing nothing.

The book Tao Te Ching is the most sacred Taoist text. It had an important impact on Chinese culture. For example, it had a large impact on politics as I mentioned before. The Han Dynasty was the most affected by Taoism. It treated Laozi as a god and created the Daoist movement.

According to Nations Online, Taoism focuses on "genuineness, longevity, health, immortality, vitality, detachment, refinement, spontaneity, transformation and omni-potentiality. Taoism is about the way the universe works. According to Taoism, everything is always changing, never staying still. The flow of energy, or "chi", shapes the world and the universe. Taoism argues that man should harmonize with the universe, not go against it. Another way of thinking about this lesson of Taoism is to believe that you are in a river. Instead of fighting the river, you should go with it, because that is the nature of the river.

Over all, Laozi was responsible for Taoisim, something that changed Chinese culture. Something that helped shaped China in many ways. People worship Laozi as if he were a god and he is respected just as much. Some people believe he never existed but others believe he did. Either way we should understand and respect Taoism.
