The role of color in the novel is very significant to the novel The Book Thief. The narrator, Death, uses color to explain scenes throughout the novel: “I do, however, try to enjoy every color I see- the whole spectrum” (Zusak 4).

Black represents death and mourning because it is the absence of light, color, and happiness. Black is the main color of the swastika, so black represents the death that came from the nazis and their rule. While death went to retrieve the body of a dead pilot, he saw the sky as black: “above me, the sky eclipsed- just a last moment of darkness- and i swear I could see a black signature in the shape of a swastika” (Zusak 491).

Death was explaining the last time he saw Liesel the sky was red and “like soup, boiling and stirring.” Death could hear the sirens, and he could see the “blood stream[ing] till it was dried on the road” (Zusak 12).

Snow also represents death because of the first time we meet Liesel. Her brother is dying, and the outside weather is described and white and snowy. The white represents the “coldness” of death, as well as, purity and death of innocence. Liesel's little brother was still very young and innocent.

The color silver represents security, calmness, comfort, and love. Both Han’s eyes and the lettering on the Gravedigger Handbook are described as being silver. Han’s eyes “made of kindness, and silver” brings Leisel comfort in the night when she has nightmares and during the day when he reads with her (Zusak 34). The Gravedigger Handbook brings Leisel comfort and calmness because it reminds her of her brother.

This blue sky at the end of the book represents the strength and courage that Liesel has shown to get to this point in her life.
