The Fuzzy Feeling- Warmth

Our final essay was about the undefined element of warmth and what it meant to us. “Warm sound has a tilt towards the bass frequencies. The bass and vocals are more prominent, and the higher sounds, though present, are quieter and subdued. Warm headphones and speakers tend to sound ‘comfy,’ ‘musical,’ and ‘pleasant’” (Rowe). Warm songs are generally slower sounding than other elements. However, according to Ratliff, slowness often invokes warmth, but it's not always necessary in a musical work for warmth. An example of warmth that I found in a song is the song called "Hey There Delilah", by the Plain White T's. I find warmth in this song because of the simplicity of it. It's not just a love song, but it's also about people who are far from each other and missing each other. My second example was that of "White Christmas" by Irving Berlin (recorded by Bing Crosby) is another example of warmth to me, because it reminds me of more simple times. It makes me want to curl up by the fireplace, and watch a Christmas movie. Warmth has a different meaning to each and everyone of us, but I believe that it is truly an element anyone can relate to and find in a song.
