Although The official Brazilian language is Portuguese, our language is compound of words from African and American native people and this influence grew as the contact with such cultures intensified throughout history. Recently, we are using some English words because the technology brought some new terms in our native language. Besides that, there is some difference in our language depending on the part of the country. For example, some words used in the south are completely different from the north or central of Brazil (“arroio”, “rio” and “igarapé”). The regional characteristics in this case influence the differences in the language used. Lastly, we can notice some differences between young and elder people, because young people tend to create new words to express some new fillings, objects or situations while elder people prefer to use traditional and formal terms (“crush”, “ficar pistola”, and “hater” are examples). I think these differences enrich the language because you have more words to express yourself, but sometimes it is annoying because some changes happen fast, and you cannot be updated.
