With core values of intellectual freedom and equity of access (American Library Association, 2007), librarians play an important role in building and sustaining an equity culture in schools. While many people immediately think of book selection as the primary way librarians promote equity by providing windows, mirrors, and sliding glass doors for readers through multicultural materials (Bishop, 2015), the librarian’s role can be both more far-reaching and more impactful. Curating resources for fellow educators gives the librarian an opportunity to engage other educators in equity work, to support the vital work that teachers do toward including diverse learners, and, in turn, to empower students. While there are many arenas in which to support DEI, this curated guide focuses on DEI within the context of race and specifically of Black/white relations in America. With the current issues facing our country - from continued deaths of Black people at the hands of the police to protests and demands for equity, inclusion, antiracist practices, and systemic change - racial discrimination, racism, anti-racism, and race-based civil rights are on many educators' minds. The goal of this guide is to provide resources for those who wish to engage in thoughtful, courageous instruction and conversation about race in the United States. If you are wondering why these conversations matter, I encourage you to check out the thoughts of fellow educators in Maughan's (2020) article for Publisher's Weekly, "Black Lives Matter: Crucial Discussions in the Classroom."
