The story revolves around 18 year old Simon Eaton, attempting to save his friend Kat in a video game known as Otherworld. But the twist is that if you die in the game, you die in real life. Throughout his journey, he meets several allies, makes new enemies, and finds the truth about the organization behind Otherworld, the Company.

Present right in the cover art, this is what separates Otherworld from any other video game. Ultimately, there are two ways to access Otherworld; from a disk or headset. Headset players require only 3,000 dollars and a trust fund to access the game. But disk players are given the full access, with the ability to touch, smell, and feel the real game.

Otherworld the book was written by Jason Segel as well as Kirsten Miller. Jason Segel is an American actor, starring in his famous role as Marshall Eriksen in How I Met Your Mother. Kirsten Miller is an American novelist. Together, they created the Last Reality series; Otherworld, OtherEarth, and Other Life.

I would give this book a 4.5 out of 5. I'm not qualified to review books, but I love how both authors were able to build the characters in a way where you can sympathize with them despite their actions. Admittedly, the beginning is a slow start, but that's what makes the second half of the book so grand. I can tell Segel and Miller both were invested into virtual reality, especially with the hopping in and out of both Otherworld and real life mechanic.

Theme

Otherworld is reality, but better. In real life, there are morals and people and mindset to stop you. But in Otherworld, it's different. There's no law, rule, and saying that says you need to stop. But that's the thing. The game is comparable to addition. The overall theme is taught at an early age: "Do the right thing even when people aren't looking."

At the beginning of the novel, several people may describe the main character to be obsessive, impulsive, immature, and spoiled. But as Simon is introduced to harsher and less sugarcoated environments, he becomes more determined to change his ways. At the end of the book, he is more down to earth, wise, and actually tolerable to be with. This is partially because of his relation to Katherine, or more commonly known as Kat.

Ice cave

Conflict

Conflict isn't apparent throughout Otherworld the book. However, Simon spends most of his time throughout the game fighting in several areas to reach the ice cave. The main conflict of Otherworld is that Simon has to fight his way through Otherworld’s many killers and leaders.
