I like how he tells parents i-Ready diagnostics help him (and thus the parent) know what the student knows and what they don't know. And that the Zoom meeting with a group of parents (which I was going to do) didn't go as well as the one with individual parents. I suggested my parents discuss the diagnostics with their students and give them an incentive to work carefully and accurately--perhaps an educational toy, puzzle, or game that they pick out and order together--and that the parent sits with the younger or reluctant student.

It is crucial for us to gain data in order to learn more about our student's capabilities. Reminders to help students be in a quiet space, sitting at a desk or table, and provide supervision but not help student. I love the idea of doing a zoom meeting with our students -Shelby Shupe

The kids are so distracted by things in their home that they don't pay as close attention to what is being asked. I also liked how he explained that the information is important for me, the teacher, to know how to help the child best. ~Erika

The bottom line is the data will allow us as an educational team to best meet the needs of the specific student in question. This was very helpful with key phrasing for me to use in talking with families about the purpose and preparation for taking the diagnostic at home.. (Kimberly Oropallo)

I appreciated his discussion about eliminating distractions. I think our students have learned to cope with a lot of distractions, simply due to the nature of schooling at home with siblings and environmental distractions. But, when it comes to test taking or assessments, it really is necessary to have a focused and quiet environment. So, I think I will have some good conversations with my families about how to set up a good "test taking" environment, so the students can really show their best work.

Are you able to..." it is a good way to check for understanding for parents and gives parents options in what is considered a good testing environment in their residence. I think what has really helped me is having a family where more than 1 student is taking the diagnostic assessment, because it helps establish the validity of the assessment when at least one student is close to where the parent thinks their child is performing at. - Jennifer Tam

The take away that I use is explaining to families the importance of having an assessment that enables the teacher to know where their students are. For our students this is very important due to each of them using different curriculum. I also like how he discussed the testing environment in the home as well as discussing the tests individually with parents. I think I would perhaps follow that up with a FAQ. - Andrea Peacock

A takeaway that I had from this video is the importance of families taking the iReady assessment seriously by eliminating distractions in order to set the student up to succeed in a testing environment. I will continue to communicate with families about the importance of the instant feedback given to me as the teacher and to the parent for objectives and support needed to succeed.
