Critical thinking is the cognitive process of reappraising ideas and thoughts in order to make more informed decisions and actions (Brookfield, 2012).

Information literacy is the set of integrated abilities encompassing the reflective discovery of information, the understanding of how information is produced and valued, and the use of information in creating new knowledge and participating ethically in communities of learning (ACRL, 2016).

When assignments are designed for completion by collaborative partners, the objective is for peers to learn from and with each other. This instructional approach is called collaborative learning (see also: peer learning) and is defined for the purpose of this book as constructing knowledge, negotiating meanings, and/or solving problems through mutual engagement of two or more learners in a coordinated effort. (Salmons, 2019).

Bateson's observations were remarkable coming as they did against the background of midcentury psychology, in which all learning was conceived of as a sequence of "behavior" that could be modified by reward and punishment. "Play is not the name of an act or action; it is the name of a frame for action. We may expect, then, that play is not subject to the regular rules of reinforcement. Indeed, anybody who has tried to stop some children playing knows how it feels when his efforts simply get included in the shape of the game." (Nachmanovitch, 2009).
