Samuel Francis Du Pont who was a rear admiral in the Civil War. Du Pont believed that the abolition of slavery should come through legislation rather than warfare. He was one of the most important commanders of the U.S. Navy in the earlier stages of the Civil War. He led a blockade to capture Port Royal. Then he led a naval attack on Charleston that proved a dismal failure. He was blamed for this outcome and was relieved of his command 3 months later. He died in 1865.
