Caroline Chisholm was a progressive19th-century reformer, known mostly for her involvement with female immigrant welfare in Australia. The teachings of Jesus of “Love your neighbour as yourself” were very much a part of Caroline’s lifestyle, as she saw this lived out by her parents. Her parents were Caroline Jones and William Jones. Caroline Chisholm began life as Caroline Jones in the English country town of Northampton in 1808 where her father was a landowner and a pig-dealer. Caroline’s family arrived in Sydney in 1838, however, she noticed the plight of many single women. These women were arriving in Australia without money or visions of employment. They were forced to live on the streets and were always in danger of being attacked. Nevertheless, the government of the day showed no interest in trying to help these desperate women find shelter or jobs. Initially using her own resources, Caroline took single women into her home.

Caroline was renowned during her life as a most extraordinary and admirable person. She was nourished my multiple different prayers and spiritual practicing’s. One for example was is “love your neighbour as yourself”. This was a part of Caroline’s family as her parents set out to do this every day. She felt as though she had to carry this out and used it as a motivation for her work. Another example could be that as a child a practise that she and her mother took part in was visiting the poor and sick. She would give them comfort and help her mum to assist these men and women.

Judith IItis wrote an amazing biography about Caroline Chisholm outlining her life, work and family. In the biography it states that

“She approached Governor and Lady Gipps and the proprietors of the Sydney Herald with a plan for a girls’ home”.

Meaning that Chisholm had the initiative to make this happen all by herself. Therefore, proving that Chisholm worked independently to do her best and stand up for what she believed in. I believe that Judith wrote this biography to bring more awareness to the fantastic work Caroline did. The audience of this biography would be aimed at anybody who is interested in reading or learning more about Caroline Chisholm’s childhood and the journey of her work. The impact of this writing Is astonishing because it included all of the relevant information but it also went into depth about all of the incredible things she did in her life. This biography outlined all of the little details that helped me understand how Caroline got to where she is today.

5. Investigation of Church responses in the 19th Century that inspired the reformer

Caroline Chisholm focused mostly on the female immigrant welfare in Australia. Her aim was to get all women off the streets and get them what they needed to succeed. The Rerum Novarum was an encyclical issued by Pope Leo XIII on 15 May 1891. It consisted of multiple different key ideas. However, the one that I believe connects and inspired Caroline Chisolm would be “Protection for the poor” (Section 4 Paragraph 37). This is because in this section of the Rerum Novarum talks about the poor needing support and guidance from the government. Caroline’s whole mission was about getting girls off the streets and into stable homes, also to put them on the right track to getting a job. Over the 7 years Caroline was in Australia she placed over 11,000 people in homes and jobs. This proves that Caroline was inspired by the “Protection for the poor” (Section 4 Paragraph 37) simply because she helped the poor and people on the streets by giving them a stable start to their new life.

A priest is a mediator, or bridge, between God and human beings. Caroline Chisholm was that bridge. She listened to God and lived it out and shared it with others. Caroline brought people together by the great work that she did. Observing that something had to be done to help all of the young women that were starving, unemployed and ready to prey for the unscrupulous, Chisholm embarked upon a work for which she was eventually to become famous. Caroline not only homed over 11,000 people but she also helped them get employed. She started “Home” a temporary shelter for girls to come together and help her on her journey. She brought all of these girls together off the streets into a suitable home where they could become one big family. Caroline also brought the rest of the world together by sharing her love of Jesus and living out his commands. Caroline spent time praying and worshiping God by living out what he wanted her to do. She did this by showing her compassion and simplicity whilst on her journey to house as many people as possible.

To be a prophet in the Christian sense means to “accept the Gospel in faith and to proclaim it in word and deed.” Caroline did just this by taking on the practices she wa taught as a child and lived them out all throughout her life until her death. Caroline spoke out against injustice by having the motivation to go against what people told her to do and do the right thing by her. She successfully proved those people wrong by completing her goal of helping the people that needed it the most. Caroline had to accept people that didn’t agree with her work, although she never let it bring her down as she just kept doing it.

A king is a person who has supreme authority over a territory. Chisholm had this, she had influence over people and used it to her advantage. Caroline took on the kingly role when she came up with the idea of “Home” and successfully lived it out. She gained power and

World behind the text

The Good Samaritan is one of Jesus’ most popular parables. So, to get a full grasp of this story we have to look at the three worlds of the text to be able to analyse it. The key question that can help us investigate all three worlds of the text is “Why do you think the author wrote this story”? Well I believe the answer to this key question is that the author wrote this to put the moral of “put aside your differences and help those that are in need of help” and to give people and idea of how Jesus answered the peoples questions without saying the answer. To examine the story we can also look at its origin, religious, historical or the geographical worlds. If we go into more depth about the religious world of the Good Samaritan we see that there were different groups with different religions. For example, there were the Jews and the Samaritans. The relationship between the Jews and Samaritans was fierce and long-standing. Observing the author and audience of the parable of the Good Samaritan. The Good Samaritan is a parable told by Jesus in the gospel of Luke. Jesus targeted this parable towards the Jews who hated Samaritans to such a degree that they destroyed the Samaritans' temple on Mount Gerizim. This then lead to some think that the Lawyer's phrase "The one who had mercy on him" (Luke 10:37) may indicate a reluctance to say the name Samaritan.

We can analyse the world of the text multiple different ways, through questions, exploring certain concepts and breaking the parable down into little sections. Notice that the word parable is used, this is because a parable is a simple story used to demonstrate a moral or spiritual lesson, told by Jesus in the Gospels. The parable of the Good Samaritan is most definitely a simple story that demonstrates the moral of “put aside your differences and help those who are in need of help”. To fully understand this story, we need to get as much background as we can. We can do this by asking some very simple questions. Who are the characters in the story? Well the characters involved in this parable include a Jewish traveller, a Jewish Priest, a Jewish Levite and a Samaritan. The one telling the story is Jesus and he is telling it to an expert of the law. “Where does the story take place”? Well the story is set on the road between Jerusalem and Jericho. There are some characteristics about the road between Jerusalem and Jericho that push home the point of this parable with even greater power. The road between these two places was a major access for trading, caravans, military personnel and the pilgrims who visited Jerusalem. Given the remote terrain, people on this road were easy targets for bandits, who would have found plenty hiding spots and escape routes into the desert where no one would chase them. When Jesus pointed out that the man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, the listeners surely would have recognized the dangers that his journey posed. There are many more ways in analysing the world of the text, they were just some examples that can give you a better understanding.

We can analyse the world in front of the text by looking back at our key question. This being “Why do you think the author wrote this story”? Well its simple, the author of this parable wanted to spread the moral of the story and how Jesus answered the peoples questions and told stories to answer them. We can also ask ourselves “What did the author want people to know about Jesus or about God”? This question was a bit more difficult as you would have to read between the lines to fully discover the answer. However, I have come up with an answer. This being that I believe the author wanted people to know that Jesus helps you to understand what you are asking and not just giving you the answer. He wants you to figure it out yourself so that you can go and spread what you learnt. Additionally, to examine the world in front of the text we need to ask ourselves “what does this text mean to us today”? To me this text today means that even though we may not like or love someone, if they need our help we need to put aside our differences and help them up again.

Lifting them off the ground and getting them back on their own two feet. Caroline did exactly this when she arrived in Australia. She saw so many women without a home, family or employment, so Caroline took it upon herself and decided to help out as many people as she could. Giving them h a place to call home and some type of employment. She helped over 11,000 people get off the ground and back on their own two feet again.

The Caroline Chisholm Society is a 21st Century group that continues similar participation in the priestly, prophetic and kingly roles of Jesus. The Caroline Chisholm Society is a public company limited by guarantee. Inspired by Caroline Chisholm, they support mothers with babies and toddlers. They offer support from the moment a woman learns of her pregnancy to the time her youngest child starts school. This organisation holds the same values that Chisholm held the whole way through her life being, kindness, compassion and respect. The group demonstrated the priestly, prophetic and kingly roles by being the connection between God and the rest of society to preach the word of God and live out his actions. They also use their voice and influence in a good way to speak out about the issues and provided support for pregnant or women with children in need of help. They are the next Caroline Chisholm as they state that she was their inspiration and their vision is to complete her journey in the current day. Their goal is to deliver support in families of pregnant women or women with children who are in need of assistance and compassion. They are achieving this by living out the word of God and living out the values that Caroline had.
