Poseidon was seen as the creator of new islands and calm seas. When offended
or ignored, he supposedly struck the ground with his trident and caused chaotic springs, earthquakes, drownings and shipwrecks. Sailors often prayed to Poseidon for a safe voyage. Athena became the patron goddess of the city of Athens after a competition with Poseidon, and he remained on the Acropolis. After the fight, Poseidon sent a monstrous flood to the Attic Plain, to punish the Athenians for not choosing him. Aphrodite is usually said to be born out of sea foam but in the Iliad, Aphrodite is described as the daughter of Zeus and Dione.  Aphrodite has many lovers but this caused rivalry among men so Zeus married her to Hephaestus, who, because of his ugliness and deformity, was not seen as a threat. Hephaestus overjoyed but Aphrodite did not love him. Aphrodite’s husband is one of the most even-tempered of the Gods, but in the Odyssey she is she is portrayed as preferring Ares,
the volatile god of war because she is attracted to his violent nature.

down because of his injuries from being thrown by his mother, Hera from the top of Mt. Olympus. Hephaestus made all the weapons of the gods in Olympus from Aphrodite's famed girdle, Hermes' winged helmet and sandals to Eros' bows and arrows and Pandora's box.  Hera was jealous of giving birth to Athena by himself so she gave birth to him by herself but was then disgusted with Hephaestus’ ugliness and threw him from Mount Olympus to the earth below.
However, Hephaestus gained revenge against Hera for rejecting him by making her a magical throne which, when she sat on, did not allow her to leave but Hephaestus let her go after being given Aphrodite as his wife.

In some mythological stories Hermes was very cunning and would outwit other gods when necessary for the good of humankind, or sometimes for his own pleasure. Hermes led the dead to the Underworld. Dionysus was the last god to be accepted into Mt. Olympus. The most common origin given for Dionysus was that he was the son of Zeus and Semele. Zeus seduced and impregnated the beautiful princess of Thebes, but then a jealous Hera tricked Semele into demanding that Zeus reveal his true form to her. As a mortal, Semele could not look upon a god’s true form without dying. Zeus managed to rescue the unborn Dionysus and he was taken to Silenus and the rain nymphs of Mount Nysa to be raised hidden from Hera’s wrath.  He was also responsible for bringing the Golden Touch to King Midas an unruly king who ruled Crete.
