Even though the fire burns the little one in chapter 2, it also is tearing apart the group and being destructive to them without physically hurting them. The fire is causing trouble-from the argument in chapter 3 about wether fire or meat was important and isproducing more tension between Ralph and Jack.

In chapter 7, Sam and Eric encountered what they thought was the beast on the mountain. The rest of the boys encountered the “beast” on the mountain and cowered from it as well. (Pg. 154) The main priority was supposed to be making a fire and getting rescued, but the fear of the beast has really distracted their thinking. Fear can really make you think very different ways. The idea of the beast and how each of them reacted even led them to split into groups.

You can see this when Jack suddenly snatches piggy’s glasses off his face. “Ralph made a step forward and Jack smacked piggy’s head. Piggy’s glasses flew off and tinkled on the rocks. Piggy cried out in terror.” Showing, and representing the victory of human savagery over rationale and civilization.

Jack Merridew is an example of a character that shows how much nature and the isolation from a society filled with adults can change such a prim, proper boy into a wild, beastly savage.
When he was first introduced (chapter 2), he was arrogant, but still had the mannerism of a schoolboy who was influenced by the adults in his life. As the chapters move forward (Chapter 3 and so on), you can see how much he changes. He becomes this wild animal that has the desire to only hunt. I believe that Jack's desire to hunt is to show strength and superiority to his peers (choir group, Ralph, and himself). You can find him telling Ralph and the others about how they need to hunt, him telling the story of how he killed the pig or next time he'll kill the pig, or him mentioning something that makes him look bigger and braver to others or what he thinks will make the boys think that he is brave and strong.
Over time, you can see that Jack and Ralph are fighting over who's truly leader. It's not as obvious, but you can see it with evidence that has been shown throughout the book. These boys on the island are like a pack of wolves. For example, a wolf pack is ordered by ranks. Both Jack and Ralph are fighting for the Alpha rank, the most highest and respectable rank. Both boys are the most dominant out of the pack and have the natural-born leader skills to manage the pack, so they would be able to compete for the rank of Alpha. The biguns like Roger, Robert, Bill, and etc would be under the rank of Alpha. They carry out the orders of the Alpha and aren't "strong" enough to compete for the title of Alpha yet. The littluns like Johnny, Maurice, Henry, etc would be like the wolf pups in the pack. The littluns would be considered wolf pups because they are still young and haven't fully reached the age of maturity yet. Rather than work, the wolf pups play with each other and have fun just like the littluns. Then there's Simon and Piggy, these boys are considered the lowest rank of the pack or an outsider, mostly Piggy. Wolves are ranked by their strength and capability, so both Piggy and Simon would be the weakest links in their pack.

Quotes that are significant:
"We want meat.” (Repetitive throughout chapters 3 and so on)
"But I Shall! Next time! I’ve got to get a barb on this spear! We wounded a pig and the spear fell out. If we could only make barbs-“ pg. 51
"Jack had to think for a moment before he could remember what rescue was. Yes, of course! All the same, I’d like to catch a pig first-“ pg. 51
This is significant because Jack is completely compelled to the idea of hunting (want) than the idea of getting rescued (need). He wants to show superiority and strength and show his peers that he’s not a coward like some people.

"He looked in astonishment, no longer at himself but at an awesome stranger. pg. 64
"His laughter became bloodthirsty snarling... And the mask was a thing on its own, behind which Jack hid, liberated from shame and self-consciousness. Pg. 64
This is significant because the mask turns Jack into someone else. Someone different. He can hide his true emotions behind the mask and not be ashamed because no one can see him under it. The mask is symbolic for hiding your true emotions and being someone else completely.

"Bollocks to the rules! We’re strong-we hunt! If there’s a beast, we’ll hunt it down! We’ll close in and beat and beat and beat-!” Pg. 91
This is significant because Jack doesn’t care about establishing rules anymore. He’s becoming a savage beast even though in the beginning he said they would act like proper Englishmen and have lots of rules to stay in order.

Not only did the conch brought people to the assemblies but it also established the ability to speak during those assemblies. Ralph seemed to have power because he blew the conch and brought everyone together. In chapter 8, (page 179) Jack’s new group of hunters stirred troubled with Ralph’s new fire. No, we weren’t asleep...” This quote shows that Ralph does not believe that Sam and Eric saw the beast he thinks that they may have had a nightmare. Since the beast has entered the scene the boys have been on the edge and seeing the thing moving around they jumped to an assumption.

Ralph tell them to share the news to everyone and soon enough everyone gathers. Though out this group discussion of the bestie they talk over each other, even if they don’t have the conch. They fight for the conch and jack tells piggy to “shut up” several times even though piggy has the conch. The conch is like a spotlight and when you have it you can speak, but it is shown in this chapter that even if you have the conch like piggy it still doesn’t guaranteed that you have a voice to talk.

Piggy is a character that some people can relate to. He's always been constantly teased and isn't taken very seriously due to his appearance (mostly his weight). Even when he was at school or on the island, Piggy would be an easy target to pick on and could be considered an outcast. He's the only character (at the moment) that has asthma, weak eyesight, is chubby/unfit, and mentions his auntie a lot. He's also very knowledgeable and comes up with most of the ideas that Ralph would use in the meetings. In addition, Piggy supports Ralph the most and he is the one who has been with Ralph the most.

Piggy can sometimes have huge outbursts and can confront a character if he feels the urge to, but Piggy can also be a chicken/coward when it comes to confronting someone who seems much more stronger and powerful than him. Piggy will usually back off, but he will still be unsatisfied and bark more rather than bite. Also, Piggy is more of a pessimistic, realistic, scientific thinker while Ralph is more of a optimistic, hopeful, "wants to get rescued immediately" thinker. Meanwhile, Jack is more of a power hungry, strict, "I'm right, you're wrong, shut up" thinker, and Simon is more of a calm, peaceful, hopeful thinker.

Quotes that are Significant:
“You and your blood, Jack Merridew! You and your hunting! We might have gone home-” pg. 70

This is significant because it was Jack's fault that the boys could not get rescued earlier in the book. Piggy is too upset to be scared of Jack and even stands up against him.

“I got to have them specs. Now I only got one eye. Jus’ you wait-’ Jack made a move toward Piggy, who scrambled away til a great rock lay between them.” pg. 72
This is significant because Piggy is pretty much the definition of "all bark, but no bite". You can tell that Piggy can also become a coward if the argument becomes more physical.

“I got the conch!’ Said Piggy indignantly. ‘Ralph-they ought to shut up, oughtn’t they? You shut up, you littluns! What I mean is that I don’t agree about this here fear. Of course there isn’t nothing to be afraid of in the forest. Why-I been there myself! You’ll be talking about ghosts and such things next. We know what goes on and if there’s something wrong, there’s someone to put it right.” pg. 84

“Life,’ said Piggy expansively, ‘is scientific, that’s what it is.” pg. 84

“ I know there isn’t no beast-not with claws and all that, I mean-but I know there is no fear, either.” pg. 84
This is significant because Piggy is more of a realistic, scientific thinker. Unlike Simon, who's more hopeful and looks at the what ifs/beyond the scientific world. Piggy isn't the type of person to believe in supernatural paranormal activity or anything that can't be proved with science.

“What are we? Humans? Or animals? Or savages? What’s grownups going to thing? Going off-hunting pigs-letting fires out-and now!” pg. 91
This is significant because Piggy is targeting Jack and is aware that Jack has become more of a savage beast over the time they've been on the island. Also, Piggy seems like the type of person to be more mature and act more like a grownup than a kid. He seems to lookup to the grownups and make them seem like they're high power royalty (or something along that line). To add to this, he even mentions the grownups and how they would be ashamed if they saw the boys act like wild, savages instead of proper, well-mannered school boys.

“If Jack was chief he’d have all hunting and no fire. We’d be here till we died” pg. 93

“I’m scared of him,’ said Piggy, ‘and that’s why I know him. If you’re scared of someone you hate him but you can’t stop thinking about him. You kid yourself he’s all right really, an’ you can’t breathe. I tell you what, He hates you too, Ralph-” pg.93
This is significant because you can tell that Piggy is afraid of Jack and how Jack controls the group. Piggy will cower down when it comes to people who show an aura of superiority and power like Jack Merridew.

Kali Nguyen - Chapter 5-8

Throughout chapters 5-8, Ralph begins to lose power while Jack is gaining power from the boys. Specifically during chapter 8, where Jack secedes from Ralph’s tribe and makes his own. Ralph’s main goal is to get rescued which means that the boys have to tend to the fire to create a smoke signal. While, Jack’s main goal is to be a wild, savage and hunt all the time. If you look at it from the boy’s perspective (especially the littluns) it would seem Jack would be more desirable because he can provide them with meat and fun while Ralph can only provide them with optimism and fire (and also the shelters). The power from Ralph slowly decreases as Jack becomes chief of his own tribe. In addition to Ralph losing power, the conch is also losing its power. The more boys that come to Jack, the more the conch loses its power. It seems that Jack doesn’t believe that the boys should follow the conch, but to follow his voice instead.

Significant Quotes:

“And the next thing is that Ralph said my hunters are no good.” pg. 126

“Ralph thinks you’re cowards, running away from the boar and the beast. And that’s not all.” pg. 126 “He’s like Piggy. He says things like Piggy. He isn’t a proper chief.” pg. 126

“He’s a coward himself.” pg. 126

“On top, when Roger and me went on-he stayed back.” pg. 126

“He’s not a hunter. He’d never had got us meat. He isn’t a prefect and we don’t know anything about him. He just gives orders and expects people to obey for nothing.” pg. 126

These quotes are significant because it shows that Jack is a backstabber. As Jack uses the conch to create an assembly, he says all these negative things about Ralph in order to kick Ralph out of the chief seat, and make himself become the new chief.

“Who thinks Ralph oughtn’t to be chief!” pg. 127

“Hands up,’ said Jack strongly, ‘whoever wants Ralph to not be chief?” pg. 127

“Jack’s cheeks, then came back with a painful rush.” pg. 127

“His gaze avoided the embarrassment of linking with another’s eye.” pg. 127

“Humiliating tears were running from the corner of each eye. ‘I’m not going to play any longer. Not with you.” pg. 127

“I’m not going to be a part of Ralph’s lot-” pg. 127

“I’m going off by myself. He can catch his own pigs. Anyone who wants to hunt when I do can come too.” pg. 127

“He leapt down from the platform and ran along.” pg. 127

These quotes are significant because you can tell that even after Jack says all these negative things about Ralph to the boys (in order for the boy to be persuaded to pick a new chief), it doesn’t workout in his favor. Instead, Jack feels humiliated and decides to withdraw from Ralph’s tribe to become his own chief.

“We’ll hunt. I’m going to be chief.” pg. 133

“Now I’m going to get more of the biguns away from the conch and all that. We’ll kill a pig and give a feast.” pg. 133

“We’ll take the meat along the beach. I’ll go back to the platform and invite them to a feast.” pg. 136

“We’ll raid them and take fire.” pg. 136

“Listen, all of you. Me and my hunters, we’re living along the beach by a flat rock. We hunt and feast and have fun. If you want to join my tribe come and see us. Perhaps I’ll let you join. Perhaps not.” pg. 140

“Tonight we’re having a feast. We’ve killed a pig and we’ve got meat. You can come and eat with us if you like.” pg, 140
These quotes are significant because it's like Jack is making a political move, for example, he's pretty much saying, "Join me and I'll provide you with meat and fun." He's trying to make himself look good in order to gain "votes" so that he can make Ralph and the conch powerless.

“Sit down all of you. They raided us for fire. They’re having fun. But the-’ Ralph was puzzled by the shutter that flickered in his brain. There was something he wanted to say; then the shutter had come down. ‘But the-” pg. 141

“But the . . . oh . . . the fire! Of course, the fire!” pg. 141

“The fire’s the most important thing. Without the fire we can’t be rescued. I’d like to put on war-paint and be a savage. But we must keep the fire burning. The fire’s the most important things on the island, because, because-’ He paused again and the silence became full of doubt and wonder.” pg. 142

“Oh yes. Without the fire we can’t be rescued. So we must stay by the fire and make smoke.’ When he stopped no one said anything. After the many brilliant speeches that had been made on this very spot Ralph’s remarks seemed lame, even to the littluns.” pg. 142

These quotes are significant because you can see that Ralph is at the lost of words to make his speech sound inspirational and leader-like. Now that Jack has disbanded as well as some of the biguns, you can see that the power is shifting to Jack rather than Ralph.

“At last Bill held out his hands for the conch. ‘Now we can’t have the fire up there-because we can’t have the fire up there-we need more people to keep it going. Let’s go to this feast and tell them the fire’s being hard on the rest of us. And the hunting and all that, being savages I mean-it must be jolly good fun.” pg. 142

“-to a feast-” pg. 142

“-meat-” pg. 142

“-crackling-” pg. 142

“-I could do with some meat-” pg. 142

“The littlun sat, solemnly thinking of meat, and dribbling.” pg. 142

These quotes are significant because the boys are now won over by the idea of meat (and fun) and now they have the urge to join Jack’s tribe to become savages and eat meat. This shows the idea of Ralph losing power while Jack is gaining power.

Kali Nguyen - Are Humans Innately Savages, Civilized, Both, or Neither?

I believe that humans are innately savages. Why is that? Because being civilized isn’t something that you’re born with or you know instantly. Being civilized is something you learn when you’re younger and grow up with. Humans can’t be innately civilized because that’s like saying a kid instantly knows what the difference between right and wrong without someone teaching them. Humans are savages deep down because everyone is capable of creating chaos and even violence, it just takes time until when. If we never enforced laws and limited the power of the people, humans would create chaos and it would be just like the movie ‘The Purge’ but 24/7. Because we have laws and we have people that enforce them, we don’t need to be savages because we will get punished for it. We are influenced by people every day and since we have people to tell us what is right and wrong and teach us manners, our chaotic side just doesn’t show up (for most people).

Kali Nguyen - Why is Simon Considered a Martyr?

A Martyr is basically a hero. Simon is a martyr because he was the only character that was brave enough to go up to the mountain to face the beast. To face their fears. He was the kind of character that was hidden and you would always have to make sure you were paying attention to what he did whenever the book mentioned him. Simon figured out that the beast on the mountain was just a dead body. He even risked his own life to warn the boys about the beast being just a dead body. Simon fulfilled his duty as a hero to tell the other boys about the beast and was the bravest to face the beast himself. At first, I didn’t really care about Simon, but the more I looked at his actions and what he’d done, I’m really grateful that he became one of my most cherished character in this book. Simon was pure boy who was the only one who didn’t go savage. He’s the pure/innocence side of mankind while Jack is the savage/chaos/evil side of mankind.
