Design Elements

My first attempt at Design Elements lesson 2. I had so much fun just going for it / (staying loose - which is not easy for me). However, I will do a better job of remembering to draw my design / playing field first before beginning the piece (as happened in some of these!) 😜

What a great way to isolate and concentrate on each design element, while also learning more intimately about your object and how it can 'hold space'. Thank you, Anita!

Any feedback please to incorporate into a second study of another object?

Landscape Design Elements

Hello, I can count on my hands how many landscapes I have ever done. So this was fun. I did get the post it tape and taped the design field though may not be clearly showing in this ‘tile’ of 9 photos. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

PS: sorry about the lighting in the photos, it has been stormy grey fog days - no daylight.

I barely know what I am doing with watercolor. I was trying to find that balance between warm and cold colors in conjunction with value....I will keep an eye out for a watercolor class with you.

As always feedback is appreciated!

PS: to get granulation with your watercolor is it the type of paper you use (I am using hot press smooth here, and maybe I used too much water) or the paints themselves need to be 'granulating' to achieve that molted look?

Also still very poor lighting conditions for the photo & not picking up the very pale lavender color of the top layer of trees well.

My first attempt. I started with the sunrise on top left and dropped toward the middle bottom for the sunset, and generally, for whatever reason worked right to left.

Initially it was fun, then it got overwhelming, and finally a bit more ease.

This is an exercise I need to keep practicing and perhaps take a sketchbook of these squares with me to hone that "Haiku" type practice of capturing the landscape in as few 'strokes' as possible emotively ….

PS: had fun mixing up the use of media to including use of my inks.

So I got these studies done from the Drive By, however, having a hard time deciding what to expand to a 12 x12...

Is it that it's done with ease as it's fewer strokes?

Is it that I am working at a fast clip to keep up with the class compared to my usual pace?

Not sure if this can go bigger?

In color, they work for me ...however, of these studies, Hummingbird tree is the one with the biggest range of value comparatively ... is it depth / ‘space’ not coming through more clear?

Not sure what the resolution should be ...

Help! Feedback would be appreciated.... I would like to figure this out and try them bigger.....

PS: How do you finish a piece you want to keep? ...e.g. Do you fix the pastel with a pastel or charcoal spray?

I just realized all 3 studies from the Drive By are about birds. 😂 Hopefully all 3 can go big and become the Bird on the Brain Series.

Going Bigger

Getting Better? Keep debating (but staying out) if I should make the top indigo textured line even darker to make it clear (?) that it denotes my eye line / the horizon.

Got a little too wet and lost bottom edge … thinking this is getting better….? Evolved more to a sand storm in the dessert (dessert was the intended terrain where I have experienced the world of falconry)… Did not use black, just a mix of colors with indigo blue for a really dark color. Though I am tempted to fuss with it, I did get in & out. 😝

This maybe my favorite of the going bigger pieces. While I need to practice, practice, practice... I wanted to be sure to go big while you were giving feedback.

In the meantime, also want to take this opportunity to thank you for a Fantastic class! Learned a lot and very grateful for your generous guidance to include feedback on all my work.

I do hope there will be other classes you teach - I would happily sign up and no doubt learn more.

I had a lot of fun with this exercise, especially using the ArtGraf which I’d never tried before :-). I found it very helpful to focus on the different elements. My favorite of these is the shape one.
