The Umayyads were the first ones to make an Islamic empire, stretching from the Arabian heartland to the territory of Spain. They originated from a mainly merchant family in the Quraysh tribe. When civil war broke out in Ali's rule, the son, Muawiyah, of the leader of the Umayyads, Abu Sufyan, was able to take control, giving himself the title of Umayyad caliph. After this, two branches of family would rule this nation, the Sufyanids (descendants of Abu Sufyan), from 661 CE to 684 CE, and the Marwanids (descendants of Marwan I), from 684 CE to 750 CE.
