Darius lacks in self-confiedence, you can tell in different parts of his story. Darius and his father relationship is improving, One of Darius uncles made jokes about Darius's weight. Darius father saw his son sad about something and made the effort to cheer Darius up. 

Darius finally opens up to Sohrab about his depression and how hes been feeling lately. Instead of Sohrab telling Darius to not show his emotions, Sohrab encourages Darius to express his feelings. They quickly become best friends, this was Darius first real friend. 

Sohrab quickly becomes Darius best friend, but over time while playing soccer with Sohrab ,Darius sees Sohrab is just like everyone else because after playing a game of soccer the boys decided to wash up and everyone including Sohrab made fun of Darius uncircimsized Penis. His family in Yazd Iran are very closed minded to keeping the stereotype of a "Man".  As well as Yazd the officers that pulled Darius to the side to ask "question" Darius's depression pills were pulled out of his carry-on and the second officer asked what they were, Darius explained that they were for his depression. Darius could feel his judgement, but he didnt take it to heart because Darius's mom warned him about people not being as opened to mental health in Yazd. 

Darius's mom apologized for not teaching Darius Farsi, she wanted him to have a "normal" life at high school. Darius understood where his mom was coming from, for darius it was hard enough being half Persian but imagine being Full Persian. Darius knew his mom wanted the best for him.
