1. Why and how do we study literature? Why do we study TTTC?
We study literature because books teach us as reader's very important lifelong lessons. They teach us different things that people went through and actually experienced. For example, in "The Things They Carried" we learned the burden of the Vietnam War that many soldiers who fought in the war experienced. By reading this book I gained so much respect and awareness for our soldiers who go out and fight for our country. They are risking their lives in order to protect ours.


2. How are we affected by literary texts in various ways? How are we impacted by TTTC?
The goal of many books especially TTTC is written in order to affect the readers and for them to try and understand what these soldiers are going thorugh. This book impacts reader's by bringing awareness to our soldiers and gaining massive respect and love for them as they are going and fighting for our country. Especially after reading this book in particular the author's goal is to try and put the reader's in the soldier's shoes as best as possible in order for them to try and get a grasp at what war feels like and looks like.

3. In what ways is meaning constructed, negotiated, expressed and interpreted in TTTC?

In "The Things They Carried" the meaning of war and the effects war has on people is expressed through different stories about the soldiers experiences at war. Through these stories the meaning of war was really portrayed. It was shown to leave psychological damages to these soldiers which was affecting them both mentally and physically for years after the war and essentially the rest of their life.
4. How does the structure of style of TTTC affect its meaning?
The structure of TTTC is extremely effective because the reader's are put in the shoes of the actual soldier. By telling these stories from a personal point of view it shows what they went through during the war and how they felt. It also showed what they saw. They witnessed traumatic events momentarily. I think this style was extremely important when discussing and having a very important theme in order to get that across and really develop a connection with the readers.

During the harkness discussion I think I did a good job at being confident and open about sharing my ideas. I think my group overall could have improved on moving more fluently through the conversation but we all were very confident.

Humans read and write stories in order to live an experience. Whether that's an experience you have lived or an imaginary one people write these to put you there it's almost like a form of transportation. It almost lifts you into a new place like another time period. I think writing stories helps expand your creativity level as well as the readers who are reading your story. Writing a story can help you discover things you want to do or possibly reflect on past events and experiences that have already happened. Either way i think storytelling is a unique and creative way to learn more about yourself and develop almost a new world. I think that people write stories to almost "escape" from their current life or flashback to a past experience. Reading stories is a true beauty because after writing them you get to sit down and really transform the words on paper into a picture in your mind. It's really cool because books can be so different depending on the reader. If the words don't give a clear description of something then one reader could picture a character or scenario in their head completely different than how another reader might view it.

  1. How important is cultural or historical context to the production and reception of a literary text?
I think that cultural and/ or historical context is important when reading a text because it can help develop a deeper understanding when reading the literary text. I by no means am saying that this is necessary when reading but iI think having the background allows the reader to make more connections throughout the reading and develop a clearer understanding. 
  1. How do we approach literary texts from different times and cultures to our own?
In order to approach literary texts from different times and cultures I think it's important to realize that you were not living in that time period and therefore only know things to a certain extent because you were not living through it. I think it's important to go about things with respect and love. It's important to love everyone and treat everyone as equals. Regarding cultures, you may not believe the same things as people but that doesn't give any excuse to treat others differently because of what they look like or what they believe.
  1. To what extent do literary texts offer insight into another culture?
  2. How does the meaning and impact of a literary text change over time? 
Overtime, the meaning and impacts of literary text can change drastically or almost barely. I think that this all depends on the efforts being made by the people. For example, injustice was a serious issue during the Great Depression and for many years consisting of Blacks and Whites having separate schools, buses, and drinking fountains. Over the years, there has been a drastic change as none of those hell yes!longer exist. I think that even though this has changed drastically, there is still issues with racism today.

How did you do during the Harkness discussions? What feedback did you receive?
I did well during this discussion I felt very confident and a lot more comfortable sharing my ideas. I really liked studying poetry and so I think that helped with my confidence a lot during the discussion. I think that our group overall did better at being comfortable with each other but I think one thing I can continue to work on is remembering to build off of others rather than just trying to get my own thoughts I have in that aren;t completely relevant to what we are talking about.

Some connections I noticed between some of Hughe's poems include the constant want and awareness that African Americans are urging for. The poems all pretty much highlight the effects of slavery and how detrimental and painful it is. Almost all of the poems are told from an African American standpoint in order for them to inform and show their personal experiences with slavery and how they are being treated because of their skin color.
How does Hughes' poems connect to other works we've read?
Hughe's connect to many of the other works we have read. For example, in "The Things They Carried" a constant highlight has been on pain and suffering of war. Much like this, the Langston Hughe's poem highlight the same two concepts but instead of them being from war they are from slavery.

How does Hughes' poetry connect to our world today?
Hughe's poetry very much connects to our world today because there is still injustice in our world. I think these poems were great to read to just remind people and show them the pain that these African Americans are feeling and it's all because of their skin color. These poems showed us how strong and powerful the African American community is in Harlem. In all of these poems the speaker is a Black person speaking out about their experiences and their feelings and they all show how they just want equality and they aren't afraid to stand up for themselves and fight because it's so horrible and saddening to think that these people are being treated so wrongfully because of their skin color.
How does art reflect the community from which it comes? 
Art was used during the Harlem Renaissance as a way for African Americans to celebrate the African American culture and their identities.   1. How does the structure or style of a literary text affect meaning? Consider how Morrison's stream-of-consciousness, shifting points of view, and use of analepsis and prolepsis impact the meaning of the novel.  
The meaning of the novel is heavily dependent on the author's use of shifts, character point of views, and language. In Beloved, Morrison used the method of stream of consciousness to allow the reader's in on the different characters views throughout numerous events in the story. For example, when Sethe killed her children we saw from her standpoint that she did that to essentially save her children from a life full of slavery so she did it out of love. From the eyes of the schoolteacher, Sethe as seen as a crazy person for killing her kids but little did she know her true intentions for doing so. All of the different methods that Morrison used contributed to the theme of slavery and the effects it can have on people's lives.

Time and Space

  1. How important is cultural or historical context to the production and reception of a literary text? Consider the story of Margaret Garner, the Fugitive Slave Act, and other historical and cultural phenomena and how that has impacted the creation and reception of Beloved.
With this book, it is extremely important to know some historical context. This isn't necessary when reading the book but it can definitely help because knowing the Fugitive Slave Act was being discussed around this time period helps when reading about Sethe and how she doesn't wish for her kids to live a life full of slavery. Being familiar with the Margaret Garner story will help to understand Sethe's intentions when she murdered her children. Much like Sethe, Margaret Garner celebrated her killing of her own daughter in order to prevent her children from being returned to slavery.

Beloved connects to both the Langston Hughes unit as well as "The Things they Carried" because al of them have a common theme of pain, trauma, and suffering. In Langston Hughes there was a common theme of slavery and the detrimental effects slavery has on a person's life both physically and mentally. In "The Things they Carried" a huge focus was having to cope with trauma that people at war were experiencing and how that effects them both at war and years after. This relates to Beloved because Sethe was having to cope with her whole life full of slavery. She struggled with this and she did so much that she decided to kill her kids so they didn't have to experience it.

How does Beloved connect to our world today?
Beloved relates to our world today because the book focuses on how slavery practically dominated America in the past. Now, after seeing how that affected our nation our country today is striving to rise above that so it should never happen again. How does the novel specifically address issues of gender, writing and power? The novel specifically addresses gender through the character of Sethe. The protagonist of the book is Sethe who is an african american woman who was picked to show the ways in which black women suffered from slavery. Beloved touched on the idea of how women often formed bonds in order to tackle this oppression together. The style of the novel gave thoughts of women because it was written from a woman's standpoint. We see a huge theme of machismo which is the idea of having an extreme sense of pride. We see how the Vicario brothers develop this machismo with the killing of their fellow citizen Santiago Nasar. The boys didn't want to go through with this act but they knew they had to because they gave into this societal pressure and they did it in order to "honor" their community and what they believed.

I think I really enjoyed this book because it was a graphic novel. The book takes place during the Iranian Revolution. There are many people who have just died because they were killed by the republic and the Shah. Marji throughout all of this has to try and deal with the reality around her. Marji gets very upset when she finds out her friend' father was apart of the secret police under the Shah and has been killing multiple people. She wants to revolt against her friend and get angry at him but her mother reminds her that it's not his fault. How are we affected by Delbo's memoir and her imperative for us to "Try to look. Try to see"? How were you affected by Auschwitz and After?
I think Auschwitz and After has a huge impact to the readers who are reading. This book was written to try and allow the reader's to fully understand what life was like living at one of these camps and to understand how much people are affected by this pain and trauma. This memoir really speaks about the movement of life and death. After reading this book, I feel very fortunate for the life I have been able to live and I have better sense and understanding of how precious life is because these people weren't guaranteed another day. They lived day by day constantly in pain and in fear not knowing if they were going to ever see loved ones again.

Consider the Hexagonal Harkness we had and some of the global issues you came up with during that discussion.
    One global issue we discussed in the hexagonal activity is how a community's actions influence individuals' perceptions of their own memories. For example, Delbo isn't comfortable in her community at the camp so she has to use her own imagination in order to create comfort for herself during these traumatic and stressful experiences such as trying to survive at the camp. While O'Brien finds his comfort while being at war through his community because of the relationships they formed with each other which only brought them closer together. One more global issue we discussed was the role of community. There was a lack of community within the Auschwitz camp which meant that people were basically just looking out for themselves.     How does Auschwitz connect to our world today?
    Auschwitz connects to other books we have read in reference to different global issues. This books really connects to Persepolis because both are written from a personal point of view who both share their experiences. One of those being surviving the Auschwitz camp and the other one being sharing her experiences living through the Islamic Revolution. Both of these discuss the important issues of injustice going on around the world and also this idea of finding self worth and building that self identity while going through these difficult situations and overcoming these obstacles.
