The biggest Ball Drop that people across the country tune into is in Times Square, New York. This tradition started in 1907, and the very first ball was made of iron and wood, and adorned with one hundred 25 watt lightbulbs. It weighed 700 pounds! The resason there is a ball drop is because in Englands Royal conservatory they had a time ball which would drop at 1 o'clock every afternoon as a signal to captains. While America may had wanted to seperate from Europe they choose to carry this tradition on until it became what it is today.

Family is a huge deal so everyone returns to their family to celebrate, and if they are unable to return a place is set for them at dinner in honor of them. During the day people worship their ancestors, light fighercrackers, watch excentric parades in the street, and dancing. People also say Peace For All Time to each other to bring luck into the New Year. As the New Year strikes people watch fireworks with their familys. On the 15 day of the new Year they light lanterns and send them off, and even make competitions out of it.

In Poland New Year's Eve is known as St Sylvester's Eve. This name according to legends arose from Pope Sylvester I, who was supposed to have imprisoned a dragon called Leviathan. The dragon was suppose to be able to escape on the first day of the year 1000, devour the land and the people, and was suppose to have set fire to the heavens. On New Year's Day, when the world did not come to an end, there was great rejoicing and from then on this day was called St Sylvester's Eve. Now they still celbrate this dragon with fireworks, and sticking close to their family and friends throughout their celebrations.

New Years in Egypt isnt actually celebrated until the cresent moon is spoted and an official announcment it made. The sighting is carried out at the Muhammad Ali mosque which is at the top of the hill in Cairo. The message is then passed on to the religious leader known as the Grand Mufti and he proclaims the New Year. The men who have been waiting outside the mosque wish each other a happy New Year by saying Kol Sana We Enta Tayeb! and then go home to tell their families. Then all families sit down for a special New Year dinner. On this day everyone dresses up in special clothes even the girls are allowed to wear bright colored dresses, because usually they are only allowed to wear black. Boys are given a sweet molded into the shape of a boy on horseback and girls are given one in the shape of a girl wearing a dress. The New Year for the adults is a day for visiting friends, and at the end of the day everyone visits the mayor.

Each country has its own traditions regarding food, however here are some of the most prominent and interesting ones. In Spain, they eat a grape at each of the twelve bells that count down the New Year for luck. In many different countries, they have something called King cake, which is different variations on cake, but they all have something like a ring in the middle. Whoever gets the piece with the ring gets luck for the next year. Finally in Germany, they drink spiced punch to represent pigs' blood, and eat pig cookies believing that the pigs will bring them luck through the next year.
