My inspiration for this was the short film 'a portrait' which used a 8mm camera to take its footage, as I do not have access to a 8mm camera i decided to edit the effect on in post production. While 'a portrait' is more of a short documentary i decided to go in the direction of horror as I had also seen movies like 'sinister' and 'the black phone' which use the super 8mm effect to create tension and horror effectively in them. This led me to take a direction of an 80's slasher movie with my photo journey. I decided to use a long uninterrupted close-up and also used post-production to turn the footage black and white. This encourages the viewer of the documentary to empathise with the sad subject matter that the video is about. I also used archive footage at the start of the film to show the emotional change from my younger years. To capture this I have taken low angle photo graphs of the food stalls, this is to not only capture the different ethnic cultures represented in them but the low angle also makes the stalls seem bigger and more lively to the viewer.
For the photo series I took inspiration from the photographer Margaret Courtney-Clarke and her photo series 'Caged'. The series uses images to show the ethnic culture in Namibia and how the drought has affected the culture. While my photo series doesn't directly link  with it it gave me inspiration to explore different ethnic cultures in Sheffield as it is a culturally diverse city, this ultimately led me to exploring the cultural diversity inside the moor market .
In post-production I have edited the contrast and brightness of the image as the Christmas lights that have been setup all around the moor market cast a harsh white light in the photos and make parts of the photograph seem overexposed. Along with this I have also increased the sharpness of the image as I believe it has made the photos look better than the original non-edited ones.
Overall, I believe I have achieved my goal of capturing the different ethnic cultures of the moor market in my images and I believe my post-production has also increased the quality of the images through the edits made.]]> 2022-12-10 00:56:26 UTC https://padlet.com/cartwrightdaniel526/1s6ij6md7xsrjav4/wish/2416138254 cartwrightdaniel526 https://padlet.com/cartwrightdaniel526/1s6ij6md7xsrjav4/wish/2418397419 The goal with the group video was to create an informative documentary about the flat earth community using relevant stock footage and narration to guide the viewer through the history and modern age of flat earthers.
The inspiration for the documentary was the short film 'Disconnected' as the film also similarly uses narration of people during the covid lockdown to guide the viewer through what it was like to experience it. This inspired us to use narration in our own film so we wrote a script with the purpose of exploring the history and modern revival of the flat earth community. 'Disconnected' also used professional looking sweeping shots of the desolate streets during the lockdown to accompany the narration playing alongside it. This inspired us to use relevant copyright free stock footage from YouTube to accompany the narration of our short film. However, while in 'Disconnected' we don't see the interviewee giving their thoughts on the lockdown, in our short documentary we decided to include a secondary asset interview to give the viewer incite into why the flat earthers believe in the conspiracy theory.
To keep the viewers attention throughout we decided to make the documentary relatively short and we believe we have achieved this as the runtime of our film is 4:33.
The role that I had in creating the documentary was both completely editing the finished film and also doing the accompanying narration that is present throughout.
