However, this growth was accompanied by harsh working conditions, long hours, child labor, and bad urban living standards. Cities expanded rapidly as people moved from rural areas to work in factories, leading to overcrowding and the rise of 'slums'. The economy grew, with Britain becoming the world’s leading industrial and trading nation. However, it also led to pollution and poor health due to environmental degradation from factory emissions and the dense, unsanitary living conditions in urban areas. The steam engine, improved by James Watt, powered factories, trains, and ships, dramatically increasing productivity and transportation.
