Both the US and USSR spent billions of dollars trying to create the first nuclear bomb. Nearing the end of the Cold War the USSR had nearly spent 27% of its total gross national product on the military. This was crippling to their economy and helped to bring an end to the Cold War.

An open conflict is a conflict where it affects people that aren't in the original conflict. The initial conflict between capitalism and communism was just between the US and Russia but since this was an open conflict more people started to get involved like Great Britain and Italy. As mentioned before the USSR spent almost 27% of its national product to the military which is a lot. Economically it affected both Russia and the US heavily. They both spent billions of dollars trying create nuclear and atomic weapons. Socially it affected people that weren't supporting either the Free World or the bloc because they might have been a bit worried that one of these nuclear weapons might be tested in their area.
