What comes to mind when you hear media literacy?
Probably , something connected to social media or internet, and you are not wrong. However, there is much more into it than you think. Technologies are opening up new frontiers that seem impossible!
Turn picture books into movie posters! If you scan the picture with your phone, it will come alive and describe any news or other information in colors.
Media literacy helps you analyze the infinite amount of information into a form of communication. There are two types of media literacy.
The first one is traditional or “old- fashioned”.
The second one is digital. As you may already guessed, it is everything connected to the digital world.

Media literacy: what is it and why it is important

What is media literacy?
Media literacy is the ability to apply critical thinking skills to the media we engage. Media literacy allows users to analyze media messages to see propaganda, censorship, or one-sidedness in news and special programs and understand the structural elements that affect the information. For example, who is the media owner, and what is their funding model.

Why is it important?
Nowadays, fake news and disinformation has become widespread in the internet age, so it’s important to be able to differentiate between fake news and real news. The media we consume shapes our opinions on many different important topics – including politics, healthcare, and current events.
The last thing we want is to base such important opinions on lies and misinformation. Platforms such as Instagram and Facebook allow rapid sharing of information, which gives news a chance to spread quickly, often making the fake news seem believable.

Abdrakhman Akchurin and Arystan Shukenov
