I believe we should absolutely continue reading the classics in schools because they are representative of former societies and allow us to contrast them with our society today. It's like learning history and studying literature at the same time. We don't need to agree with the ideals, but it would be naïve to ignore that they once existed.

While I haven't read the whole book and don't have the whole picture yet, I think it is important to take into account the age of the story or the way it is written. As the book gets older and older, it becomes more out of date and more difficult to read. So, when asking a class to read it, the old language and style may make it more difficult for students to fully understand the arguments made in the text.

I think that there are a lot of classics that are beneficial to read and analyze today, but I also think that there are some books that we could look past. For example, reading various Shakespeare plays is not as beneficial as reading more modern poetry that analyzes our world today. When we analyze our current systems, we are able to navigate the world with a more expansive lens. I do believe that books from the past, classics and others that may have been overlooked historically, are still essential to English and literature classes.

I do believe we should still be reading classics. Books such as Gatsby reflect the influence of history on our world and also show mindsets of the past. By being able to analyze this we can better the present. Disregarding the past, and older "classics" would create a one sided view. Moreover, although the selection of the books is not representative the books are still impactful and well written. The key is to not making them core cirriculum so that a scewed perception on our society is not pushed into the minds of the youth. Keep them labelled as classics but do not push monolensed views onto the education of the youth.
