As the book gets older and older, it becomes more out of date and more difficult to read. For example, reading various Shakespeare plays is not as beneficial as reading more modern poetry that analyzes our world today. When we analyze our current systems, we are able to navigate the world with a more expansive lens. Books such as Gatsby reflect the influence of history on our world and also show mindsets of the past. By being able to analyze this we can better the present. Disregarding the past, and older "classics" would create a one sided view. Moreover, although the selection of the books is not representative the books are still impactful and well written. The key is to not making them core cirriculum so that a scewed perception on our society is not pushed into the minds of the youth.
