Close Reading:

This article surveys a wide range of research on how creators work within algorithm driven platforms focusing on themes like “market rationality underpinning visibility,” “neo-normative control of creators through algorithms,” and how power is distributed between algorithms and creators.

For my project (“The Algorithm, the Audience, and the Creator’s Journey”), it gives strong backing for the idea that creators often adapt their content and strategies because of algorithmic demands not purely audience desires or their own creative impulses.

It also supports my point about tension: creators want to be authentic, but algorithmic pressures push them toward optimization, visibility, and relevance.

This source is particularly helpful for my first research question: How do content creators perceive the influence of platform algorithms on their creative decisions? I can cite this review to show the broad structural forces at play beyond individual creator anecdotes.

Close Reading:

This article investigates how producers of science content interpret or imagine the workings of recommendation algorithms (“algorithmic imaginaries”) and then structure their content strategies accordingly.

It directly ties into my example with Maya where she says “I plan my content around what the algorithm will like, not just what I want to make.” This source shows how that planning often emerges from creators’ beliefs or perceptions of the algorithm, not necessarily full transparency of how the algorithm functions.

It also connects to my second research question about strategies: creators adopt specific tactics (e.g., simpler language, longer watch time, dramatic hook) to satisfy what they believe the algorithm prefers.

Additionally, it touches on creative authenticity vs algorithmic adaptation, feeding into my broader discussion of tension between voices and visibility.
