I would say that my parasocial relationships have had both positive and negative effects on me. The first one that comes to mind is negative, and it applies equally to real relationships. Because psrs are inherently one sided, I experience all the anguish and suffering that comes from any unrequited affection. The feeling of stress and anxiety when I run out of content relating to that character, or the knowledge that I will never actually be able to speak to them or know them is very difficult for me. On the other hand, this motivates me to contribute creatively to the body of fanwork for the character through art or writing. It also increases my experience of strong emotions and helps me to learn more about writing, empathy, media analysis, and even myself.

I had a parasocial relationship with kpop celebrities, specifically the boy band BTS. I purchased a lot of their merchandise and I was in the twitter community. The online fans gave me a huge sense of community and I spent a lot of time online because of it.

The longest lasting fandom I've been a part of has been the emo/punk/hardcore/etc. music scene. I may have jokingly said "it's not a phase, mom" many times at the age of 11, but many years later it appears that it truly wasn't. While I am no longer particularly active in consuming or creating content for any of those groups, many of my closest friends were made throughout the years based on that connection. My parasocial relationships with many of the people in these bands has also led me to learn instruments that I play to this day, and to have a community among music nerds and band kids and the general performing arts world that I otherwise wouldn't have.

For like the span of 3ish years I was in the Billie fandom...It was interesting. Okay for my ten year old self it was amazing. I loved having a community and everyone was so so sweet to my baby self. But looking back at it I guess there were some downfalls. I got sort of obsessed over growing a semi large following and keeping it a secret from all of my in person friends and family members. My dad wasn't so happy when I found out I was dming random people and posting for thousands of strangers bahha. Butttt...I have a life long friend out of it. I still facetime her everyday and it's so crazy to think we could last long without ever even meeting each other but it's great. I also think like you were saying in your presentation, it is so odd that my younger self would cry over billie cause of how obsessed I was when she didn't even know who I was. I swear for my younger self she was the only person that I felt was there for me. In ways she was kind of like my imaginary guardian angel but really that imaginary person was just myself.
