• form groups of appropriate size: to large not every one can contribute, to small there is not enough diversity, discussion 4-5 people , more then discussion 3.
• determine group composition: do group work often, if they choose their own groups they would want to work but when friends are together others might feel out, you have more control when you put them into groups.
• encourage all to participate: give some peer pressure, if all participates there is a better chance for success, two ways are task related- giving ideas, opinion and asking questions, atmosphere related- encourage, compromise and share views.
• foster group cohesion: better communication, they establish their own goals and live up to expectations, they set aside their differences. 
• offer encouragement: give praise to those who work hard and well.
• mediate dispute and help learners reach compromise: help to resolve conflict, explain others ideas to help them get productive
• encourage active listening: listen to hear and understand not to reply with your own ideas and opinion on everything
• help group leaders to be effective: give guidelines, make sure everyone has a role and is doing they are suppose to, let them understand they have to listen and work with the leader.

Make the task clear and specific:
Teachers need to give learners a clear understanding about what they need to do, provide them with the amount of time they have and how they will be assessed
Help the group to define its position and refocus on the task:
Learners that are not use to working in groups will experience difficulties and therfore tends to get lost in the process. In this situation the teacher needs to listen to group discussions  and help the group to define its position and refocus on its goals.
Prompt learners to consider a new line of thought:
When leaners do not have aby ideas on the given topic, they tend to loose interest, however the teacher needs to provide group members with new challenging ideas to keep them focused.
 Give leaners information directly:
Teachers needs to provide leaners with direct information, the reason why this information is provided and how they can get this information on their own. This will help learners to work more independently.
Ask leaners to provide specific information:
If the leaners are not providing enough information,the teacher neess to help the grouo members focus on the topic ,by asking the group members to provide more facts or examples to the information.
Give opinion:
Teachers need to encourage leaners to provide their personal opinion when busy completing the task.
Help learners to record the results of their learning efforts:
Appoint one member of the group to be the recorder  and provide guidelines to improve the quality of the information recorded.

While they are working in groups, you should position yourself in such a way that you are aware of what each group is doing. To minimize problems, move closer to any group that you think will experience or create problems.
Adopt one of the following roles to help a particular group:
Tutor: There will be times when you have to instruct a learner, or group of learners, by providing them with additional information, explaining things to them or simply answering their questions.
Discussion leader: Sometimes you need to intervene and take over the leadership of a group, asking questions or making comments and suggestions, to promote student thinking and learning. Take this role on if the designated leader is unable to keep the group productive and focused.
Consultant: Sometimes the learners in a group will be unsure of the conclusions they are reaching, possibly because of their lack of knowledge of the subject. You should engage in supportive interaction with the learners. However learners should be encouraged to solve their own problems.
