Stories

In this song, I found it very important to repeat the pre-chorus as it was used to break up the different sections of the music. The pre-chorus is different to create the feel of change throughout the song. Also, the in pre-chorus the music stops at the same time the lyrics say the word 'stop'. This is used to be able to grab the audience attention again and bring them back to the scenario that has been presented by myself. The lyrics ideas are about love and being treated in a certain way that society wants us to do. These lyrics are very generic as other groups and artists are focusing on the same idea throughout their songs and material.

In the bridge section the music changes to give the audience a whole new feel on the song and being able to understand the moral of the song which is ‘don’t run away from your problems’, this can be regarding relationships or social life in general. Whilst writing this piece my focused inspiration was Lucy Spraggan, she creates upbeat guitar pieces using a variation of techniques with her guitar as have I. I decided to use this technique throughout my piece as they create an upbeat feel. Instead of strumming one to every beat in the chorus I’d strum twice in one beat to create a running feel which suited the lyrics as well. This song is all about running away from problems that case you up later in life.
Due to the rhythmic elements in this song the theme is felt throughout the audience.

I believe my strongest point through the song is using the variation of sections throughout the piece as it creates an upbeat song that differs from others. The different sections allow the song to relate to a smooth flow into the sections which is why people like it. If I were to change one thing about my piece I would had more vocals on the track to create harmonies which would make the whole song feel more complete and add a whole new outlook on the song. To improve I’d use different lyrics in all the choruses to complete the story throughout the song. Different lyrics would mean more differentiation which would make the piece more professional. Also, using more instruments would help the message of the song to come through even more as using a subtle piano would help to bind it all together to create the perfect song. Overall I believe this song will feel more complete with the use of other instruments such as an indie drum beat to give a syncopated feel.

When the Whistle Blows

When are writing this song the first idea I had was the chord sequences. As guitar isn't my main instrument I wanted to have a simple chord sequence, doing this allowed me to be creative with the melody line which worked in this song. The ideas of this song were created as I was listening to an artist calls George Ezra whose song writing skill shine in the music industry. In most of his songs he has the verses quite low key and quiet and then the chorus completely different in harmonics structures and vocals powers and elements. Throughout this piece my main inspiration for my piece must be Mcfly’s song ‘Love is easy’, they create fun, upbeat love songs which I aspired to create throughout my piece. I aspired to create an upbeat and catchy piece which allowed me to use a rhythmic and harmonic structures throughout.

The main strength of this piece is its simple yet effective chord progression I had sued to create an up- beat and fun piece, another strength is the use of tempo to make this song happy and cheerful all the way through. Although if I were to improve this piece I could have more variation in the guitar part, even just a slight change in the guitar part could really effect my piece for the better. Such as a different strumming pattern or even picking the notes to create variation. Even though the song is quite cheerful the lyrics behind it are about an arguing couple that still love each other but want to break up for their kids’ sake. So, they’re not raised in a family full of hatred. They find this very hard and can work through their differences.

To improve this song, I believe I need to modulate to a new key. Yet again I was very fond of the melody line and the lyrics. Even though the chords seem quite happy the lyrics are very metaphorical about violence in a relationship. This piece has allowed me to go out of my comfort zone by using a guitar but to enable the highest grades I’d like to achieve. I wanted to push myself to understand more about other instruments in the way they collate with others and intertwine. Overall I believe this piece would offer full potential when supported with a full band as the rhythmic elements from the drums and bass would really add to the decorative guitar part.

I Told You

As I was writing this song my first inspiration must be James Blunts Bonfire heart, using a guitar as his main instrument using few simple chord sequences to create his timeless soft, love songs. The main strength of this piece must be the effectiveness of simple, soft chords throughout which shape's the song. I believe I could explore using more contrasting and exciting chords such as extensions (7ths, 9Ths and 13ths) these would add a twist on the generic pop love ballad which would create a feeling of happiness even in a song about adultery.

For me I have never started a song with chorus, I thought I’d do this to create and grab the audience’s attention right at the beginning. This worked as the song started quite loud and then died down. In songs, it’s important to fluctuate in volumes as it shows that contrast can be had even in a song such as this. In the song, I added abit of ab lib as the song needed it to call it a pop song also it’s there to tie the many sections there is together to create a nice flowing, contrasting piece. I want people to listen to the song and feel sorrow after it. Next time I'd like to add more sections, such as a bridge that could modulate to the relative Major.

To improve this song, I’d like to use more instruments such as brass to create a slow jazz, r ‘n’ b feel which would be nice. But can only be achieved with a full band included backing vocalists. Also, to improve this track I would have to add another section with different chords to get another outlook on the song. The music behind this song is not important at all as my lyrics are there to back up to the whole story to the problems that’s are going on. I wanted the song to feel quite spacey and that’s why I added more reverb on the track then the others. The echo feel from the reverb allowed the track to feel spaced out. The use of reverb as well added a nice sustain feel to the piece. This worked very well when it was combined with the vocals and complemented it very nicely.

Compared to the other two songs this song was the most difficult as I was completely pushed out of my comfort zone. In future, I believe I wouldn’t create another song such as this one as It didn’t feel like a good song. Although it didn’t turn out great it taught me a lot about myself as a songwriting and which ideas work better together or without. Overall I believe all three of the would be better in a whole band situation with brass as well. The songs could then be able to explore their full potential.
