I think most people are scared to put this bias out there that they are people who have these cultural traditions in fear that they will be shamed for sterotyping all the people in that group. But its not like these people are ashamed of their past and in fact they are very proud of their past and want to bring attention to their ancestors.

Grant DeHaan

As I look at this image, I think of the rigorous cultural traditions and rituals. In this photo, it looks like this man is doing some sort of dance or ritual. I have learned about certain traditions and rituals that some Native Americans have from books, shows, and even Native American village in 4th grade. These traditions are strange to those that don't live in that culture, but I sometimes forget that we have traditions just like they do. Some of these include matching Christmas traditions, trick or treating on Halloween, or looking for eggs on Easter. I sometimes tend to almost judge Native Americans for their traditions, but then I must remember everyone was made in the image of God, and we have traditions, just like they do.

The colors, and complexity of their dress conveys, supports this. It is really cool to see that they still hold their heritage and culture as important, and respect it and bring it life, as you can see here as they are at some type of event or festival. It is very different than what we as Americans are used to seeing, and I think it really points to the uniqueness of each culture.

Whether it is how they are dressed or what traditions they partake in, each and every individual provides an insight into their deep and meaningful culture. In our society today, it is easy to buy into shallow, and borderline meaningless, beliefs and values. Instead of searching for deeper meaning and purpose, we have settled for superficial morals and standards. I think that it is incredibly unique that the Native Americans have such a deep devotion to what they stand for.

Ben Mooss

When I first see this photo of a Native American man I see an image of a man who takes a lot of pride in his people and has a lot of devotion to the thing that he is doing (I'm guessing dancing). Based on previous knowledge I know Native Americans had a lot of traditions and rituals that they would do for various reasons and at different times. I know these Native people had a deep sense of pride and devotion to what they were doing and they tried to immerse themselves in nature and feel deeply connected. The Native American way focused on family, freedom, tradition, and using the land and resources they had wisely. One thing I notice and wonder about is why he has an eagle and a lot of red, white, and blue, as well as an American flag in the background. I wonder if these things like the eagle are original to the Native Americans or if they are trying to blend modern America's ideals with their own. I have a personal connection to these people because my adopted uncle is fully Native American so I am interested to learn more about these people.

It sticks out to me that while he is dressed up and participating, there are people in the background in "normal" clothes and taking pictures of him. We have learned about Native Americans and I know that this type of dress and dancing was a big part of their culture, so it is interesting how unique and different it looks to us now. This shows how much people and cultures in one place can change over time, and how some people will adapt to new ways while others cling to their original cultures. It also shows that while we might think of something as "weird," it can be normal for other people and each culture has their own definition of "normal."

I see many traditions, superstitions, and cultural meanings that I do not understand, such as the eagles, beads, feathers... I think of a culture that is lost, one that many people are disturbed that it is. In my opinion Many people try to protect American indians in the wrong way, by taking away the memory of them, their heritage, and traditional names/ clothing. For instance people other than American indians have taken costumes, names (football teams) and many other things away from our society that we remember them by because they think it is dishonring them. When remembering them is more honoring.

Molly Moenning

My first thought when seeing this picture was that those participating are very proud of their culture and traditions. I find it interesting that there is an audience, and it makes me wonder if the spectators were there to learn, or if they were there for the purpose of entertainment. However, the passion of the man in the photo is admirable, in America today many people don't have a culture or belief that they're this passionate about. Christians are called to be this passionate and bold about our belief in the Gospel.
