For example, jealousy, need for power, and young women acting were just the beginning of the accusations of witchcraft. 20 people were sentenced to death in 1692 in the small town of Salem, Massachusetts. At the time, young girls were acting (accusing people of witchcraft) because they were jealous of older women with families and power. With that, they then accused others of witchcraft, and their plan worked. " They soon...became intoxicated...by the terrible success of their imposture (acting), and were swept along by the frenzy they had occasioned..." ( Doc D).
