When the Theme First Emerged

Harper Lee first developed this theme, when Scout first went to school, and Miss Caroline was the new teacher. Since Miss Caroline was a new to Maycomb county, the children had to understand she had different ways of operating things, and they had to accustomed to it.

Relationships (2)

Harper Lee demonstrates tolerance in relationships with Aunt Alexandra, Jem and Scout. Aunt Alexandra holds her family in high regards, and expects no less than a best effort to show class in her family. Jem and Scout don't hold as much dignity for the family, nor do they really care. However, they must realize that Aunt Alexandra's beliefs are hers and it's her opinion. And they must respect that fact. Harper Lee also demonstrates relationships and tolerance with Atticus's relationship with his kids. As an example, during winter days, Jem and Scout create a snowman as a phony representation of their Mr. Avery. When they invite Atticus outside, he's not necessarily angry at this disrespect towards another person. But he thought it was rather silly, and it's like he understands what its like to be a child. But he tells Jem, "We've got to disguise this fellow..." "I don't care what you do, so long as you do something."

Harper Lee demonstrates tolerance in conflict with Atticus being understanding of Bob Ewell's troubles with his daughter being raped. So he allows himself to take Bob Ewell's frustration. Harper Lee also shows that Atticus has tolerance for Mrs. Dubose when she says this to Jem and Scout for example "Your father's no better than the negro and trash he works for". He knows that she is unhealthy and isn't all there, because she is on morphine.

Harper Lee demonstrates tolerance in characters when Arthur Radley (Boo) rescues Jem and Scout from Robert Ewell. He is revealed later on, as a hero, because he took out Robert Ewell, and brought Jem back home. Harper Lee shows characters through tolerance, because in chapter one, Jem and Scout believed that he was a monster, because of how strange he was. He, however shows that in the last chapter, he has human emotions. He smiled to Scout, when she ran to where Jem was sleeping. Arthur is shy and introverted, but caring.
