Botticelli draws us into the scene by placing the figures of Jesus, Mary and Joseph back from the foreground. They are higher than everyone else which portrays their high authority - relates to religious context and understanding at that time.

The crowds of people in the painting are symmetrical with Jesus' family (and cosimo) in the middle of them. They seem to be the focal point of the painting. The crowds symmetry creates a triangular composition (?) to the painting. Triangle/pyramid relates to spiritual context as it has 3 sides (trinity).

The horizon line is just above halfway and draws viewers eye to the centre with the holy family. The horizon also gives the audience a glimpse of heaven as it is above the crowds but not above the holy family.

The elevation of mother and child replicate that of an altarpiece. Again relates to a religious context. Altar is usually in centre of church and the holy family is in centre of painting.

Humanism is seen portrayed in the round and curved edges of the painted faces and hands creating depth .

Light also creates depth and perspective and an intense sense of form seen in this painting.

Cosimo Medici is seen holding baby Jesus with soft rounded and graceful hands. Connecting the Medici with the importance of the Holy Family.

The faces of the characters are foreshortened from above below and behind

The form of the characters seen in the painting are outlines with sharper lines, creatind defined 3D forms.

Botticelli paints himself in the painting where form is used to create a more 3D like form where he gazes out rather arrogantly outward inviting the audience in. He painted himself to portray himself as a friend of the Medici

Joseph is painted with softer brush strokes and curved edges to porteay him as gentle.

- The Bethlehem Star hovering above the Holy Families head symbolises their holiness and their divinity.
- The outdoor, soft lighting creates a gentle, naturalistic mood within the piece.
-The only directional light within the painting is from the Bethlehem star, otherwise it contains general lighting throughout.
- The aerial perspective background is lighter, showing it is not in the shade of the shed.

Botticelli uses bright light to illuminate the figures in the forground with a light blue coloured background , this brings the viewers attention to the people in the foreground, and makes the painting have an arial perspective. Jospeh and Mary are painted in a yellow toned colour that is radiating from the star of bethlehem to highlight them as significant figures and makes them stand out from the other peoples, this makes the medici family have a higher reputation and they are seen near the holy family who are easily recognised by viewers. This painting uses a limited colour palette focusing on warm, earthy tones with accents of reds and blues on peoples clothing suggesting a royal status and wealth. But for Mary the red she wears symbolises divinity and the red shows the blood of Christ. The earthy tones show the people as humble.

- The adoration of the magi is an oil painting.
- Botticelli's use of tempera grassa, a medium that was new to Italy, in which the egg yolk was modified by the addition of oil to make the paint more transparent.
- The men appear with darker flesh modeled from ochre applied over the black wash under-drawing, which sometimes remains visible and reinforces the more pronounced male bone structure and such features as the eye cavities.

- Botticelli's use of space seems almost never-ending, due to his use of Aerial perspective.
- There is a clear foreground and background.
closed in foreground- closer relationship with God, inviting us into the picture.
- Botticelli uses overlapping, which draws the audience's attention to certain character's in the painting. Eg; Lorenzo in the bottom left corner. He appears closer. Medici family are placed in the area of the triangle. Although Medici family did not commission it, to have them so prominently in the painting was important as they were the most powerful family
- Botticelli himself is also a part of this triangle
- Botticelli's use of background creates depth. This alludes to the interest of humanism at the time.
- The holy family are directly in the middle, in the audience's viewpoint.
