Salam (peace) to all.

I am a junior lecturer from Advanced Medical and Dental Institute (AMDI). By training, I am a polymer chemist focusing on polymer for biomedical application research such as nanocarrier for drug delivery and artificial blood. I joined USM in 2015 and had the opportunity to teach in two modules last year.

My teaching experience is obviously minimal. However, I 'foresee' this course as the one that will equip me with latest knowledge on teaching instruction leveraging on appropriate technological tools so that, not only I can be a good teacher but also a relevant one in this 21st century.

Being a young academician, the enthusiasm is very high. Therefore, I would like to channel this high energy effectively to enhance the learning experience of my students.

Learning is not a process to produce an intelligent and skilled robot, but a human being that is capable of acquiring the two elements for greater good of humanity. This requires instilling virtuous values of which are often forgotten in classroom due to many reasons. Regardless of that, it is a sacred responsibility of a teacher to lead by example so that he can ascertain the knowledge imparted and the skill inculcated are in good hands for a sustainable tomorrow. Without noble values in human being, doom is almost certain.

"A true teacher does not teach students to think like him, but without him"~Tariq Ramadhan

When a teacher is no longer around in this world, his fruitful words of wisdom exemplified by his righteous embodiment will continue to inspire future generation through his greatest legacy, the students.

Assalamualaikum and Hello everyone! I am a lecturer of Landscape Architecture at the School of Housing, Building and Planning (HBP).

As a new lecturer, I see teaching is a challenging task, yet interesting because we disseminate knowledge to a crowd of eager minds. In turn, we get good feedback including new knowledge. Teaching is more than imparting knowledge, it is inspiring change. Whilst, learning is more than absorbing facts, it is acquiring understanding. Thus the challenge is how to make our Teaching a valuable Learning experiences for students so that they can appreciate knowledge and love to learn. As Ever Garrison said, “ A teacher is a compass that activates the magnets of curiosity, knowledge, and wisdom in the pupils”.

I also believe that learning is a never ending process. Who dares to teach must never cease to learn. And as teachers, it is important to see ourselves as learners because it will allows us to be more flexible in trying new things in the classroom, to take risks, make mistakes, reflects and adjust our practice accordingly. Thus, I do hope this workshop will give me a lot of ideas on how to conduct Teaching and Learning (T&L) more effectively, engaging and fun for me and the students. Thank you.

“Teaching, without learning, is just talking!”

I always wanted to know how to conduct one and thus making my MBA class more engaging and hopefully more interesting.

"Walk the talk" is my main idea of teaching and learning especially when dealing with matured students with vast industry background. To equip myself to be as current as them is no doubt very challenging, only through industrial experience, I believe that such topics can be taught and learned better and more effectively. I also hope flipped classroom will be able to realize the application of theories/models introduced in class....

Bonjour,
Fathyah

At the moment I have minimal experience (less than 3 years) teaching students at both post-graduate and undergraduate level.

I started to learn about blended learning, the pedagogy of education, flipped education etc during P&P course for new lecturer. I am quite surprised to know that there are many other ways of teaching. These skills are very much needed especially when taking into account that I am teaching an undergraduate in PPPJJ. I only have 2 hrs per year to interact face to face with the students while the rest of the lectures are conducted through WEBEX or online lecture. It is very challenging but well, that is what human is made for. To accept the challenge!

Yes, I am ready to change to become a better educator.

Salam and hi everyone,

My name is Nurulisa Zulkifle and I am a lecturer from IPPT, USM since 2013. In my humble experience, due to IPPT being a centre for postgraduate training only, it is the student quality not the quantity that will be emphasised and prioritised. My teaching method will focus on the employability of the students after leaving my lab, and student will be trained to acquire all essential skills needed to be a successful and independent scientist.

In my postgraduate taught course teaching, my aim is to provide students with an environment conducive to learning, trigger constructive discussion and debate, and build their confidence to present their own idea in order to produce a good scientist and ‘thinker’. Most important is, throughout the whole teaching and learning session, student interest will be on top of my priority. I see the idea of 'flipped classroom' as an interesting method to be applied in my teaching strategy. Therefore I am looking forward to learn and implement this approach for my lecture.

I came to love teaching by being inspired from those who taught really well, by engaging the minds to be curious, by explaining difficult concepts in ways that could be easily understood, sometimes illuminating the way you see things in life. Lee Shulman encapsulated this really well: “Those who understand, teach”.

So naturally, I started my teaching career trying to emulate such examples. Alhamdullillah, I could feel the joy of being an educator, to tickle curiosity and explain things “as simple as possible, but not simpler”, to quote Einstein.

That was many many years ago. Today, the demands of teaching are way different: blended learning, OER, MOOC, e-learning, social media, outcome-based education, active learning, student-centered, flipped classroom, and the list of big jargons goes on. To improve students’ learning, one had to adapt, and so did I…

It’s been a few years now that I’ve been into this 21st century ‘mode’. With so many things to learn, unlearn, relearn, colearn, yes, I could see the the rationals and the benefits behind such transition. It’s no longer about the sage on the stage, but a guide by the side. It’s no longer about teaching, but about learning. It’s not just about getting the students understand, it’s about getting them do things…

Amidst the busyness of arming oneself with the 21st century teaching tools, something was lost: the heart and soul of teaching itself. At its core, teaching was once about pure, sincere, face-to-face dialog between a learner and a teacher, about engaging curiosity, about the art of questioning and explaining, about the joy of figuring things out, etcetera. I feel those parts are losing out. Technology to me, despite being effective in making learning happen at a massive scale, is slowly taking out the organic, humane element of teaching…

I’m really at a juncture now, of moving into the future, but also of digging back into the past to find the core that holds everything together. Technology is good, make no mistake about that, but pushing into an inorganic, teacherless medium, despite the seemingly human interaction with online videos and such, will take the heart and soul out of teaching and learning.

So, what’s it gonna be? I don’t know yet. I’m still searching, and learning... Finding a balance in life is always the trickiest thing to do…

- Zulfaa, Aerospace USM.

I am a lecturer at School Of Chemical Sciences. I just completed my PnP course in January 2017. I had previously worked as a lecturer for two years at a private university before coming to USM last July. My teaching has always been teacher-centered and very traditional. I found that this method doesn’t work with students of this generation where they want all the information at their finger-tips. They get bored very fast and seems to have difficulty to digest what is being said in class. After the PnP course, I have tried a few different methods of teaching in my class recently and found that the students are more engaged and they seem enthusiastic to learn more. I hope to further enhance my teaching methods and move towards student centered learning through this course.

The mediocre teacher tells. The good teacher explains. I Amirah from the School of Mathematical Sciences. Been teaching in USM for only two years, I am still searching for my own way of teaching that will make my students enjoy every time they are in my class.

Teaching the new generation today is full of challenge. With the technologies that we can easily get nowadays, I think I need to be at least at par with them in terms of incorporating technologies in my teaching. So, I believe Flipped Classroom will open my eyes on how to be more creative in my class.

Assalamualaikum and Good day,

I'm Noorsuzana, a young lecturer from Advanced Medical and Dental Institute. I just came back in July last year and I am so looking forward to share all the knowledge and experiences I've learn with the students. However, little did I know about the proper way of teaching and how to make a classroom more lively and vibrant through new teaching technologies. Thus, I am expecting a fruitful learning tomorrow and will try to implement flipped classroom/blended approach in my teaching later.

Assalamualaikum wbt & Hi to All!

I'm Zubir from School of Management. I joined USM last year and I hope to gain some latest knowledge on teaching and learning using tools that are appropriate for the current generation.

My teaching philosophy operates within the diverse accounting complexities. The following 6 principles provide a fundamental structure for me as both academic and learner.

o Growth is developmental and requires time and patience. We are the agents of our own growth.
o There is a need to focus on strengths and use positive feedback to help learners grow academically, socially, and emotionally.
o Critical thinking helps students internalise learning.
o Success stimulates further success.
o Teachers must strive to meet learners' needs and be aware of social, emotional, and physical variables that affect the learning process.
o Teachers must seek continuous renewal and growth.

I envision that the above principles support my strategic filter through which I shape academic courses, advising and consulting students on my area of expertise. They help maintain my sense of balance and professional direction.

I propagate quality and honest education for the benefits of future generation, particularly the energetic young accounting professionals.

Good day everyone! I am Sharon, a lecturer at the School of Management. I am an engineer by background, but has since ventured into the area of innovation, knowledge management and entrepreneurship.

This is my fifth semester as an educator here in USM. I have been very teacher-centric, and I always say it is because of the subject that I'm teaching - Business Mathematics. But over the past year, following much discussions and attending CDAE trainings, my thinking has slowly shifted. I hope that I can learn more ideas and get more inspiration on how to make a difference in the way I teach.

Assalamualaikum and hi,

I am a medical lecturer at Advanced Medical and Dental Institute. I am really at the very early stage and so junior in the world of teaching. Just came back from my postgraduate studies last year and was only given a chance to teach one class so far.
I had the opportunity to attend the PnP course on last January, which really exposed me to various methods of teaching, which I have never known and heard before!!! Flipped classroom is definitely one of them!!
My tagline in teaching is " The mediocre teacher tells. The good teacher explains. The superior teacher demonstrates. The great teacher inspires". I hope that one day I will not only be a good teacher but also a motivator and a leader to guide the students to the right path.
I'm really looking forward to learn and get to know about this method, adding more knowledge to my very little experience as a teacher.

Back to the future's past...

Assalamualaikum and hello!

My name is Siti Razila and I am a lecturer at IPPT, USM.

Assalamualaikum and hi all,
I am a senior lecturer at the Graduate School of Business (GSB), USM.

This will be my first formal workshop on Flipped Classroom.

Assalamualaikum and good day everyone,
My full name as above but you could call me Fauzi or Poji. I am a new lecturer attached to School of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Engineering Campus in Nibong Tebal. My expertise and teaching area is centered around semiconductor engineering. Being an educator and researcher gives me an opportunity to teach, guide and help our young generations to explore their potential to become a flexible graduates and lifelong learners. However to do that, I need to equip myself with knowledge in teaching techniques and keeping up-to-date to new teaching tools and trends. On top of that, I do realize that the current traditional method i.e. “Chalk and Talk” is not much relevant to unleash the student’s potential and creativity. Hence I am hoping this course will be a stepping stone for me to learn and inspire my students.

Thank you.

Salam and Good Day everyone! I am a Reference Librarian at Perpustakaan Hamzah Sendut.

Currently, i am in charge of User Education Services, Reference and Research Division. Generally, this division is providing research support services to USM students through several classes or workshops such as Bibliographic Management Tools (EndNote & Mendeley), Information Literacy Skills (Basic & Advanced), Google Scholar, Google Drive, Open Access and etc.

As a Reference Librarian, i believe that we also must be a good teacher. We must be able to demonstrate how, when, and why to use various sources in an integrated way that will capture the users’ attention during learning session. We always try to find the best tools or method to use in teaching and delivering information to users. I really hope this workshop will help me to transform our traditional lecture method to more fun and interactive lecture. I hope that flipped classroom strategy can be adapted to improve my teaching.

Hi everybody! I'm lecturer from the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences. Feedback from students every semester often reflects that my teaching is too conventional lecture-based, therefore it's time for me to change the style of my teaching. I think flipped classroom workshop will be a good start for me.

There are a few quotes that I'd like to share here:
“No one learns as much about a subject as one who is forced to teach it.”

“Teachers have three loves: love of learning, love of learners, and the love of bringing the first two loves together.”

"Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire."

Assalamualaikum & Greetings, Everyone.

I am a Senior Librarian from Perpustakaan Hamzah Sendut, USM.

Not a good storyteller myself but I believe these two quotes might be able to translate my understanding on what is knowledge and what good knowledge experts can do to their knowledge seekers. ;-)

“Knowledge is not what is memorised. Knowledge is what benefits.”
- Imam Muhammad bin Idris As-Syafie, Muslim Jurist -

“A good teacher can inspire hope, ignite the imagination, and instill a love of learning.”
- Brad Henry, Oklahoma Former Governor -

I really hope that this workshop will expand knowledge of me and the rest of participants and also benefit me with new ways of facilitating teaching & learning in USM Library.

Thank you.

ASSALAMUALAIKUM & HELLO! I am a Professor of Food Technology at the School of Industrial Technology, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) and current Director of Centre for Academic Excellence (CDAE), USM.

I've been teaching for almost 24 years. I'm very passionate about learning and education. I believe our role as educators goes beyond transmitting knowledge — our role is to nurture our students, the future nation builders, to become lifelong learners — to teach them the skills of 'learn how to learn' and to teach them the appreciation and the love for knowledge.

As Socrates said, I cannot teach anybody anything; I can only make them think.

Assalamualaikum WBT and Good Day Everyone!!!

My name is Jamilah Hassan Basri. I am Senior Librarian from Perpustakaan Hamzah Sendut (PHS). I recently joined Reference and Research Division @PHS and currently in charge as Head of Strategic Program in Research Support Service Team.

Being transferred to this division means to take another leap of challenge to present myself as educator, facilitator and teacher in teaching and discovering a new knowledge, skills and expertise.
Learning and teaching comes together simultaneously in a package where as a human we reflect and guide ourselves since born, we never stop digging knowledge until then as profoundly mentioned in the Qur’an in Surah al-‘Alaq: Chapter 96, verses 1-5. The translations:

1. “Read (Proclaim!) In the Name of your Lord Who created"
2. “Created man, out of a clot (of congealed blood).”
3. “Read (Proclaim), and your Lord is the Most Generous,"
4. “Who taught by the Pen,”
5. “Taught man that which he knew not.”

I hope the workshop can improve and diversify myself into a new dimension of teaching the subject and give me a new experience in knowledge sharing and ideas.

I believe:

‘The things I come into my senses is learning intensely and the things revive me is teaching passionately’

Hi! I am Professor of Economic Sociology at the School of Social Science, Uniiversiti Sains Malaysia.

One of the virtues in Confucianism is learning. I believe education can empower people, transforming lives and societies. As technologies and societies change over time, so do our methods of teaching. I aspire to achieve excellence in teaching to instill interest in students to pursue knowledge through different methods of learning. After teaching for 12 years, I am still learning how to improve my teaching. I hope to learn new lessons from the flipped classroom by Prof. Abd. Karim Alias.
