Clara Barton founded the American Red Cross in 1881 after she helped bring supplies to American soldiers throughout the civil war. Unlike most of the women during the civil war who helped gather bandages and supplies, Barton went straight into the battlefield to provide the most help and support to the soldiers. She got the name “Angel of the Battlefield,” because of all the help that she provided for the people on the battlefield. Once the civil war was over, Clara traveled to Europe and discovered the Switzerland-based Red Cross, and that was when she decided to create the American Red Cross. She served as the president of the American Red Cross from 1881 until 1904.

Source: https://www.redcross.org/about-us/who-we-are/history/clara-barton.html

Sally Tompkins opened a private hospital, Robertson Hospital during the civil war in order to help heal and care for the wounded confederate soldiers. By June of 1865 the hospital closed its doors after dismissing it’s final patients. Because Robertson Hospital was a private facility, during the civil war she would've had to close under the orders of President Jefferson Davis, however he granted Tompkins something special because of her hospital's success rate. Davis commissioned Sally to be an unassigned captain in the Confederate cavalry in order to continue running Robertson Hospital. She continued to run her hospital until her funds were gone, and once she died, she was buried with military honors and she was the only woman to ever serve a commission in the Confederate army.

Source: https://ehistory.osu.edu/biographies/sally-louisa-tompkins

Ida Wells was born during the civil war into slavery and impacted the Reconstruction Era the most. Ida attended Rust College but soon was expelled because of a fight she had with the president of the college. She became a teacher to take care of her younger siblings and later filed a lawsuit against a train company after she had been treated poorly and with racism. She is most famous for leading an anti-lynching crusade after her poor treatment that she experienced earlier in her life. She came to be a very influential feminist and abolitionist along with a journalist during the Reconstruction Era.

Source: https://www.biography.com/activist/ida-b-wells

Battle of Fort Sumter

The Battle of Fort Sumter was fought between the dates of April 12th of 1861 and April 14th of 1861 in South Carolina. This battle is really significant to the Civil War because it was the first time that weapons were officially used between the North and the South and it was basically the beginning to the civil war. This war took place fairly early into Abraham Lincoln’s presidency because many of the southern states were not happy with him being president. The Confederate army went and attacked Fort Sumter because they didn’t want these supply restocks that they were getting from the North. When the states first separated from the U.S they wanted to keep all of the soldiers and weapons, and demanded more, however the North didn’t want anything to get physical so they didn’t grant them these wishes.

Source: https://www.battlefields.org/learn/civil-war/battles/fort-sumter

The Battle of Chancellorsville was significant to the civil war because it gave Robert E. Lee another win. This allowed him to advance farther up north. This specific battle was first predicted or thought to be a Federal win however Lee’s strategies were able to overpower Hooker’s. This is considered to be his most successful victory because of his ability to overthrow the Federal army. Lee had to split up his army into thirds at one point in order to be able to keep up with the attacks from the Federals.

Source: https://www.battlefields.org/learn/civil-war/battles/chancellorsville

Fifteenth Amendment

The Fifteenth Amendment was first proposed in congress by the Republican’s in 1869. The amendment was officially passed in 1870. The purpose of this amendment was to give everyone the right to vote no matter their race, and it would prevent any racial discrimination that might occur. Many women were not okay with this amendment because it still only applied to men, they were still not given the right to vote. Many southern states were able to find a loophole to this amendment because they did not want black people to vote, and they were able to put literacy tests and poll taxes in order to limit the amount of black voters.

Source: https://www.nps.gov/articles/the-fifteenth-amendment.htm
