As he takes the place of this service, he renames himself Ashok, and begins his new life, marking his transition from the darkness into the light.

In this chapter, Balram has started a new life in Bangalore as a successful businessman, after murdering Mr. Ashok. He reflects on his transformation, claiming that breaking out of the oppressive servant-master system required violence and cunningness. Though he acknowledges his family may have been deeply affected in retaliation, he accepts this for the cost of his freedom. His business is very successful and he uses his newfound influence to create a positive environment and example for his workers and company. Finally, Balram remarks that what he did created an opportunity that he will never regret, and it allowed him to prevent others from taking the same extreme measures.

Still worrying about potential consequences for the murder he commits, Belram seems to be in a state of anxiety, worried he may still get caught - but with slight denial and surface level excellence, he is able to continue his life.

Balram’s view of existence changes and his morals are shifted as he now has a sum of money that allows him to make up for any wrongdoing. Balram also importantly claims that slitting the throat of his master will never be a mistake, even if he gets caught, because it has allowed him to know what life was like on the other side.

While Balram’s methods to remain in power are objectively shady and corrupt (like paying off cops), Balram finally feels in control of his life- he’s finally in the Light. Balram lives in neglect towards his family, lives in fear of being caught, and continues to plan for his future while acknowledging the vast changes that have happened in his life (servant to master) as well as the developments and changes in South Indian Society allowing him to connect with both the impoverished citizens and wealthy ones too.

It’s here where we can see that Balkan truly has escaped the darkness as he escapes the crime Scot-free, however we can also see that Balram has grown as a person when he sends money to the boy’s family as compensation. As Balram wraps up the letter he reveals he’s already thinking of the future, and that he’s proud of having escaped the rooster coop that so many others are stuck in.

Balram, while in hiding finds a wanted poster of himself in which he notices a man staring at it questioning him on who it was, in which Balram claims that it could be any Indian man. Soon after, Balram prepares a business in the already competitive night driving industry, to combat this he bribes the authorities to get a monopoly. Balram later gets a call that his workers killed somebody in an accident, and as a result Balram bribes the authorities once again to clear his drivers name. The story concludes with Balram noticing that Dharam has caught onto the murder, in which he uses to playfully blackmail Balram so that he can eat more ice cream.

In order to start his new life as a business owner, he takes Mr Ashok’s identity and begins to act similarly to how Mr Ashok acted. Whilst managing his business, Balram encounters various issues such as bribing the police, and having to compensate a family whose son was run over by one of the drivers in Balram’s company. At the end, Balram remarks that no matter how his story ends, even if he does end up getting caught, it will all have been worth it to experience life as a “free” man.

He follows by telling a story of when one of his drivers ran a man over and balram manages to sort things out by placing a trap on the man’s brother with his influence on the police but he feels bad and gives the man’s family money. He ends of by reflecting on his family and on his experiences with Dharam and how he has grown, additionally he explains how he feels that he has made no mistakes in his life.

He spends several weeks in Bangalore, listening in on people’s conversations to gain knowledge for his future job but he also maintains a secret identity and he accepts that his family may have been killed for his murder. He creates a start-up company and pays the local police money to allow him to have a taxi business and he becomes a master, transforming into Ashok by changing his name to Ashok and by paying the police like Ashok payed the politicians. He has employees to drive the taxis but one of them hits a boy and so Balram gives the boys’ family money and in the end Balram is happy that’s he’s escaped the rooster coop and he’s no longer a servant.

He soon becomes the entrepreneur of “White Tiger Drivers,” a driving company in Bangalore, and goes by the name Ashok Sharma. One day, one of his drivers ran over a boy on a bike, and although normally the driving company would face punishments, the police did nothing, and instead Balram offers to pay the family for there loss, and their son a job.

Through this police bribe, he was able to kick other taxi-drivers out so he could create his own business titled “White Tiger Drivers” where he was worth more than fifteen times the sum of which he “borrowed” from Ashok. He specifically doesn’t insult his employers by calling them “family” and gives them the choice of how they want their life to be based on how hard they work, where Balram’s business gets tremendously successful; he tells the readers that he wouldn’t take back his crimes because this was needed for an ultimate success.

Balram doesn't seem too concerned about being found and arrested, and while he does spend weeks going under the radar, moving from hotel to hotel, he eventually settles into an apartment and starts his very own driver business. Despite widespread Muslim prejudice in India, Balram hires Muslim drivers and often even acts as a mentor to them, and we see his morals on full display when he makes amends with the family who's son died in an accident. He ends the book by disclosing his final feelings to Mr. Jiabao, saying how he regrets killing Mr. Ashok, reflecting on how he cherishes life as a free man, and briefly discussing future plans signing off the letter to the Chinese Premier.

Balram, while showing similarities to his prior masters, like taking Mr. Ashoks name and bribing the police, also shows he is very different, like taking the blame for his drivers and not treating them poorly.
