Humans are the reason for acidic rain. We burn fossil fuels and release chemicals like sulfur oxide and nitrogen oxide into the atmosphere. This is also a result of exhaust from motorized vehicles. These chemicals go into clouds, as well as water from evaporation. This water then has the chemicals infused into it, and is then called acidic pollutants. The clouds can travel and rain, so the harmful chemicals are put into the water supply of all walks of life. This affects the food chain and food web.

Since we are using coal based power plants coal contains sulfur dioxide. Instead we can use coal containing less sulfur. Congress has passed a law called the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990. This law limits the amount of sulfur released from power plants. Another solutioni is that instead of using fossil fuels in order to gain energy we can use renewable resources such as: solar and wind power. Since they don't cause pollution and release of sulfuric acid these would be ideal choices to prevent acid rain while powering our communities.

Acid rain effects the food chain dramatically. Since fish are dying it completely throws off the food chain. Fish are commonly consumed whether by bears, eagles, or even humans. The Acid will kill the fish. This would lead the bears or eagles with nothing left to eat. Even if the fish did survive they would still be poisoned. For example the acid rain could poison a fish in which another fish would eat the other fish. The fish that ate the other one could be then eaten by a bird. The bird would then be poisoned. Then a father and son could be going hunting and shoot the bird. Then they would bring the poisoned bird home and their entire family may eat the bird, the bird containing the poison. Even if the fish died to the acid rain it would cut off food supply for birds and bears leaving them without a food source and to die.

Acid rain can cause many health issues in humans. The pollutants in acid rain, sulfur dioxide, and nitrogen oxides have been identified by scientist as increased illness, premature death, heart disorders, lung disorders, asthma, and bronchitis. Although the acid rain is almost harmless to the body the pollutants mix with the atmosphere forming sulfate and nitrate particles. These particles will then be transported long distance by winds. People then inhale them into their lungs causing these disease.

The acid rain can cause phytoplankton in lakes to die. This will then lead to insects to have to find another food source or will die. The insects are a source of food for fish, birds, frogs, and salamanders. If the insects dies all the other animals relying on the insects will also die or find another food source. This chain of death will then ultimately consume the entire food web.
