Not sure how reliable it is by the way.

http://avatarinitium.wikia.com/wiki/Na%27vi_Sexuality

Just in case you were in any doubt that we live in a strange world, here is a perfect example.....a consideration of the sexuality of an imaginary people from a Holly wood blockbuster. All of this might well be useful to you, but keep in mind the ways in which Foucualt suggests that sexuality is constituted via discourse.

Huw

This is a very clearly organised and logically developed project, and the account of how Foucault’s concept of discourse develops through his writing career is a good way to begin the presentation and situate his thought and his critical approach. You might have been a little clearer on exactly what Foucault means when he identifies and engages with the so-called ‘repressive hypotheses’. This is useful because it allows you to track one of Foucault’s central contentions, that far from repressing the discourse of sex the last century and a half has seen western culture become saturated with it. You make some very good points about how the Na’vi are constructed in relation to sexual norms and conventions, but you might also have followed up the final quotation from Foucault about how sex has been ‘taken charge of’ and ‘tracked down’. Some specific examples about how the film rigorously polices and enforces the codes and conventions of sexuality would have been useful here, in addition to the general observations that you have made about the Na’vi. You might also have speculated about why the discourse of sexuality appears to be focused almost exclusively onto the Na’vi rather than the humans in the film. Otherwise, this was a lively and engaging presentation.

Huw
