SUMMARY FOR SESSION 1 12/12/2025

During the session 1 of usrah, we are required to introduce ourselves to each other and we are elated to get to know each other. Here, I wanna attached the summary for what we have learnt during the first session of usrah:

- The acquisition of ḥikmah (wisdom) in Islamic thought is a transformative process that begins with understanding its multifaceted nature. It is defined as the ability to discern the true nature of things and act accordingly. Scholars describe it as a blend of intellect, knowledge, and deeds , while others emphasize the fear of God and the comprehension of His commands. Often referred to as the "lost property of the believer," ḥikmah is a positive value that individuals are encouraged to seek out wherever it may be found. In an educational context, "Hikmah pedagogy" utilizes philosophical inquiry to help students internalize Islamic principles and develop independent, higher-order thinking skills.

- At the heart of acquiring this wisdom are the concepts of niyyah (intention) and amal (action). Niyyah serves as the spiritual motive behind every act, distinguishing sincere worship from deeds performed for show. To ensure an intention is correct, one must focus on sincerity, purity, clarity, and consistency throughout the act. This internal state then manifests as amal, which includes fundamental practices such as prayer, charity, and kindness. For amal to be effective in developing ḥikmah, it must be performed with devotion and consistency, serving as a physical demonstration of one's faith.

- The process is completed through ehsan (excellence), which represents the highest level of spiritual character. Ehsan is defined as worshipping Allah as if you see Him, or at least with the constant awareness that He sees you. This concept encompasses virtues like compassion, honesty, and patience. Internalizing ehsan requires a deliberate cycle of awareness, understanding, action, and reflection. By consistently practicing these virtues, they eventually become an inseparable part of an individual's character, leading to the true acquisition of ḥikmah.

It uses specific Quranic verses to illustrate how these rituals are designed to refine an individual's character and relationship with the Creator.

1. Ṣalāh (Prayer)

Based on Sūrah al-ꜥAnkabut (29:45), the presentation highlights two primary purposes for prayer:

Moral Restraint: It serves as a shield that prohibits immorality and wrongdoing.

Divine Connection: It facilitates the remembrance of Allah, which is described as the greatest pursuit.

2. Ṣawm (Fasting)

Referring to Sūrah al-Baqarah (2:183) (implied by the text), the content explains the intent behind fasting:

Historical Continuity: It notes that fasting was decreed for previous generations as well as current believers.

Attainment of Taqwā: The ultimate goal of fasting is to help the believer become righteous and God-conscious.

3. Zakāh (Charity)

Citing Sūrah al-Tawbah (9:103), the presentation outlines the spiritual and social impact of mandatory charity:

Purification: It acts as a means to purify the believer's wealth and soul.

Growth and Peace: It causes an "increase" (growth) for the individual and provides a sense of reassurance and spiritual comfort.

4. Ḥajj (Pilgrimage)

Using Sūrah al-Baqarah (2:197), the presentation focuses on the conduct required during the pilgrimage:

Self-Discipline: Pilgrims must abstain from sexual relations, disobedience, and disputing.

Spiritual Provision: It emphasizes that while travelers need physical supplies, the "best provision" for the journey is the fear of Allah (Taqwā).

We learnt a new things during our sixth session of usrah. Here, I wanna attached the summary for it:

"The Virtues Found in Zakah/Sadaqah," provides an intellectual discourse on the spiritual and social significance of charitable giving in Islam. It defines Zakah as an obligatory pillar of Islam that serves to produce righteous servants of Allah who contribute to the betterment and well-being of their community. Unlike a standard tax system designed for profit-making institutions, Zakah is a compulsory act of worship (ibadah) intended to promote spiritual purification and social responsibility. It involves both a "vertical relationship" with Allah through obedience and a "horizontal relationship" with fellow humans through the distribution of wealth to those in need.

The core details of Zakah and its distinctions from Sadaqah are outlined below:

Definitions and Religious Status

Literally: The word Zakah (الزكاة) means to grow, increase, bless, and purify; it refers to a person of goodness and righteous character.

Technically: It is a determined share of wealth prescribed by God to be distributed among deserving categories.

Religious Importance: Zakah is the third pillar of Islam, following the declaration of faith and prayer. The Quran mentions Zakah alongside prayer thirty-two times.

Purpose: It is not meant to burden a Muslim's life but to purify the soul and support the social and material dimensions of human life.

Zakah vs. Sadaqah

While the terms are sometimes used interchangeably in the Quran, they differ in their structure and requirements:

FeatureZakahSadaqahObligation

Compulsory act of Ibadah.

Recommended act of Ibadah.

Structure

A formal and structured ritual.

Neither formal nor structured.

Specifications

Specific recipients, amounts, and timing defined by Allah.

Recipients, amounts, and timing are not specified.

Scope

Includes Zakah al-fitr and Zakah al-mal.

Inclusive of all acts of giving, including Infaq and Waqf.

Core Virtues

Tawakkul (Reliance on Allah): Giving Zakah shows that a Muslim does not depend on their wealth but relies fully on Allah's decree and promise of compensation.

Ukhuwwah (Brotherhood): Zakah strengthens the bond of brotherhood among believers, creating harmony and encouraging peace within the community.

Detachment: The practice helps Muslims become less attached to material things and more focused on the Hereafter.
